Excess time on trained run is recording as run rather than cooldown

When I do a timed run, my excess time at the end shows up as a new run lap rather than extra cool down time.  My friend is doing  the same run, but their excess time records as cooldown.  This skew’s  my run pace.  I have a Fenix 5 while my friend had a Fenix 7.  Is there a setting i need to change to correct this?

below is the workout of my training and my friends.  They both shows as run, but mine (1st pic) records the run as a new lap and gets included in the average run pace while my friends doesn’t.  I slso included pics of the two run summaries.

  • How does your training setup look like for this? Do you have a warm up and cool down phase?

  • Mine does this also.  I am using the suggested workouts, and if I run over the timed run the last step (Cool Down) ends at the workout time limit, and the remaining part of my run registers as a 'run'.  This is on a 6x pro.   Normally this bit is pretty small, as I try to adjust my run so it ends near the stop, but it doesn't always work out and I end up with a longer run.

  • Yes, have both warmup and cooldown.  Looks same as friend’s.  Thinking there’s a setting i need to update ?

  • One thing I noticed ... your screenshot from 9:14 (Ted) shows only runs and not all step types. Could that be the issue i.e. you have to simply click on "all" to see your different training components?

  • No, i did that on purpose to show the 5th run lap that shouldn’t exist.

  • Ok. Then I think I know what could be the issue. Your training stops after 20mins cool down. Everything after that is recorded as a run. If you change your cool down to "stop with pressing lap button" it should solve the issue, i.e. you just press the lap button when you are home. Not sure if Im making myself clear?

The other option would be to stop after 20 minutes of cool down, save the training and start a new activity.

I ran a planned (coach) workout with a f7X, Instinct 1 Solar, and Instinct 2 Solar.  I did run past the end of the workout to mimic your results.  My displayed step type in GC after the workout varied like yours between the f7 and the Instincts.  Another oddity is that my f7's timer automatically stopped at the end of the workout (I had to resume to record the remainder of the run) while both Instincts continued to record the run until I manually ended the run activity.

It appears there are inconsistences how the extra run time after a completed workout is categorized between different watch types and/or vintages.
