Fenix 6 Pro or Fenix 6 Pro Solar

Now that prices of the 6 series are dropping I have decided to upgrade from my 5 + Sapphire.

I have the choice of a 6 Pro or a 6 Pro Solar and was wondering what are the Pro's & Con's of each model and is Solar really worthwhile on this device?

  • Solar seems to be completely ineffective - even in the Fenix 7 when DC Rainmaker did his Fenix / Epix what to buy post, solar hardly made any difference especially considering how much power the AMOLED screen burns. And solar is worse on the 6...it'll give you a couple more hours at the very best. Unless prices are very close, I'd say avoid.

  • Prices are £336 & £399 so not a massive price difference but still quite a few pennies.

  • Being in the UK, then I'd definitely steer towards no.

I suppose only you can answer this - do you spend a lot of time outdoors on sunny days? Is saving 2 hours battery on a device that'll already give you 10 days battery worth 65 quid?

  • OK, so given that Solar seems ineffectual in the UK are there any other potential benefits in the Solar model, eg performance, build quality, display, glass scratch resistance (important for me coming from a sapphire), etc.

  • solar doesn't have sapphire on the 6 line, so it's gorilla glass. Which for most people I suspect is a positive, not a negative, but there are no build advantages - the watches are identically really other than solar and even share the same firmware.

  • Personal opinion, I had the occasion to compare side by side my regular Fenix 6 to a Fenix 6 solar and very happy with the standard , did not like the look of the ring (though very narrow on the 6) and the display seemed slightly more recessed (probably due to the panel overlay). It also looked less crisp under exact same light. After all, if I remember the specs correctly the over display part of the panel has 10% the efficiency of outer ring l, which means (about) absorbs 10% of the passing light, for like 4-5% more battery life, but only in case you get 3 hours sun per day... Not worth the missed screen readability, much less the extra money

  • Thanks for everyones responses I' going for the non-solar. However I have now found a good deal on the Sapphire DLC and having had a Sapphire before I am not worried about the dull screen and and thinking DLC might be a good idea so that I don't need a TPU skin.
