How to Use Ski View Maps?

So, I have a topoactive map and ski view map both set to on.  When I hit my ski resort next week will the ski view override the topo (showing me the runs, etc) or do I need to turn off topo within the ski activity?  Never used ski view before so any tips would be appreciated.  Thanks!

  • They’re pretty underwhelming I’m afraid.  The ski map will overlay the topo but they’re not very useful. You might find adding a contour overlay is useful as well. FATMAP on a phone is probably the best thing.

  • Thanks, not something I would ever rely on, just basically entertainment.  But to be clear the ski view just acts as overlay so there's nothing special I need to do?  Just start the ski activity and it should work?  Thanks!

  • It should just work.  You can check the activity settings to make sure the maps are enabled.  You might also enable button lock it’s easy to knock the buttons when taking gloves on and off

  • I did put the skiview maps to test when we spent two weeks in Andorra just before the Covid-19 close down. The screen (I use a Marq Expedition) is really too small. You get your position in the system, but the typical paper map is necessary to navigate the entire system. Perhaps the new F7X with touch screen will be better in this sense.

For XC and backcountry skiing, on the other hand, maps are very useful. Just like trail running, you can get useful support when navigating a planned (or non planned) route.

For alpine skiing you may want to consider setting your barometer sensor mode in “altitude” and manually calibrate starting altitude to a known height (and perhaps re-calibrate during the session). The auto setting works quite well for me (v19.20), but I remember that altitude drift was a challenge for my Fenix 5 (early SW versions). Like several others, I enjoy keeping track of total descent, and number of runs.

    Enjoy the snow!

  • Another question to this : I have a Fenix 6X Pro with Skiview 2023.10 map. It shows the cross-country ski routes and workes well in combo with the local Topo map for Norway.  How do I enable navigation using the Skiview routes ? If I try to navigate to a hut in the area, and when I ask it to follow a route, it shows the closest drive road instead and the only options I get it to "avoid highways" or not .   Surely, there must be some way to tell the Fenix that I want a navigation proposal for the cross country ski route ???
