Indoor climbing auto start problem

Been using climb indoor with no problems for many months but since last update 20.30 now unusable due to auto start.

partner also has Fenix 6S pro solar and exactly the same. Constantly auto starts while belaying, or flaking rope out or even just walking between routes.

Seems to be only since 20.30 though I note a user here complained of this a year ago. Dozens of previous sessions had no issues though.

Seems more than coincidence that both watches now doing the same.

please add a ‘switch off auto start’ option.

  • I have the same problem. For beginners I think it's OK but for the rest is this app totally useless.... I even can not see the resting time because during belaying it many times starts and stops.

  • Most likely it has to do with the "amazing" altimeter/barometer upgrade of the latest version...

  • I've just changed in Altimeter setting "sensor mode"  from Auto to Altimeter only and it seems there is no issue.

  • That’s interesting.

I climbed last week and had no issue. So maybe atmospheric pressure / conditions effect it?

I’ve switched Auto calibration on Altimeter off and will report back.

  • Have the same problem on a new Fenix 7.

when I bought the watch a month ago, climbing worked perfectly.
Since a good week or so, exactly the described problem of „falsely autostarting routes“ happens.
According to the Connect-App, currently my Fenix 7 is on version 7.24.

Instead of adding „stop autorecord“ option,I would favor that they fix it as it was, i.e., working perfectly fine.

  • For me it's a problem only in outdoor climbing, because if the crag is not flat on the ground you have to move on big steps and the watch recognise this increasing of elevatiol as a climbing start. So if you hear the acoustic notification on the watch and you know that you aren't climbing you can delete the current route.

For me the app works fine in general but ther's some big improvement that Garmin should consider:

Auto-start disabling in the setting page.

the rests during the climbing, and the possibility to choose that you have finished the route with rests (now you only can choose the number of falls).

Some climbing difficulties are missing: (there's not 5b+ and 5c+)

But for me the biggest improvement should be in the Connect Web app or mobile app. I'm interested to see climbing stats and graphs.

    Please Garmin, consider it,

  • I updated my Garmin descent G1 yesterday and I start having the exact same issue. I did 9 routes today (that I always manually start) and it auto-detected at least 15-20 routes in between my climbs while I was litteraly doing nothing (not even belaying). This was super infuriating

  • Having this same issue for past 3 weeks (6/2023)—even after marking a route completed, Garmin starts a new route while I’m just belaying or walking across gym. Not aware of any updates during that time, but it’s possible one was released. I’ve restarted and confirmed that the software is up to date. How to fix? This is so annoying

  • I reported this issue more than a year ago. I really don't know why in this app I cannot set "manual starting". Last week it's much worse. It's so frustrating....

  • same problem on the Forerunner 955, please ad option on/off autostart.
