Backcountry skiing - ascent/decent start

It's good to finally have a ski touring app on an outdoor watch.
But does it make sense to start the ascent and descent manually?

Nobody thinks about that at the peak! That should be automatic! Is it possible to start automatic?

  • There was another thread about this. I’ve sent three emails so far but no reply from garmin whatsoever. The watch should know when I climb and when I descend. It’s the same on my new F7X SS as on my old F6X Sapphire.

  • Thansk for feedback. I had just a chat with the german support chat. I asked to open a ticket for automatic start ascent/descent. But she told me, that more have to ask for this feature ..

  • It has been discussed, I wrote recently to beta team, I wrote a suggestion to garmin.

The watch can detect descent / ascent while skiing, no idea why this is not possible for BC skiing.

I also asked for GC adjustmens, you cannot assign gear to backcountry automatically as BC is not in selection. You cannot store you courses as BC skiing forcthe same reason.

Unfortunately I did not receive a single word as response.

  • It would be nice to have the option of automatic ascent/descent with BC Skiing, but I probably wouldn't use it.

The problem is that for many of us our 'ascents' include significant portions of going down. I don't want the watch to automatically switch to descent mode because I have lost 50 feet of altitude if I am still very much on the climb.

It's true that you do have to remember to press the button every time you ascend/descend, but I just add it to the list of stuff that mentally I have to remember to do (jacket, hat, gloves, sunglasses, boots, bindings, skins, watch).

With alpine skiing, you never go down once you're going up the chair, and you rarely go up once you start going down. Also, it's pretty common to just hop off the chair and start skiing, without having to adjust or change anything (unlike a BC transition).

So for me I am happy with the ascend/descend being automatic for alpine skiing but manual for BC skiing.

  • That's 100% true, I don't understand what some folks think before requesting this to change the way it works.

  • No one is asking for a fixed solution  we ask for an option, what is wrong about it?

What I think when asking it is, I would like to have descent to be shown as descent (even if it is 40meters) in the graph and an ascent as ascent and I would like the watch to do it, not to thing everytime about that. If the watch is capable of it, why not to have the option to choose?

No one is forcing others to use it in a specific way.

  • That's exactly how "Hiking" works. Have you tried that instead of using the "Backcountry Skiing" activity, see if it's better for your particular needs?

  • i like it as it is,it's just my opinion. because i did the same thing before, where there have not been a BC skiing app. once i was on the top, i pushed the lap button. because i wanna know, how long it took me to get to the peak and how long i was skiing down. sometimes you have to go up and down (over a hill for example) if it would count that as a decent, i wouldn't be happy, to see 2 ascents and 2 decents. but i can understand your opinion too.

  • That’s why we need the option to set it up the way you prefer and enjoy your ski tour White check mark

  • no, I did not try Hiking instead of BC Skiing. But if I do so, I have to rename the activity later. This could not be the solution.
