Metrics for TENNIS activities

With latest 20.30 firmware, Fenix 6 has got a lot of new activities profiles, including Tennis, however the metrics for this activty are very limited.
Even on Garmin Connect the Tennis activity is basically managed as a generic activity.

Could we expect any improvements?

The Fenix 6 watch has accelerometer and gyroscope sensors which could be used to detect interesting metrics, if the watch is worn on the arm holding the racquet, these sensors are already being used to track other sports activities.

I've tried looking for an app on Connect IQ as well but it seems like most are just for keeping track of the match score.

  • I think tennis metrics were discussed in the 20.00 thread some time ago. Here you go:

    Hello,

Thanks for working on the device.

I am a tennis player and the support for tennis looks like the same profile I created for my trainings.

I was expecting backhands, forehands..but just data fields? I honestly feel a bit sad, been waiting for long and.. does that mean that I’ll have to buy an special tennis watch someday from garmin?. It doesn’t sound right to be able to count surf waves and not able to count a single forehand.

Sorry if I sound negative but ..

    Device fenix6pro sapphire.

Also a tennis player - I think you're being a little unrealistic with your expectations here to be honest. None of the accelerometer based wearables are much good for accurately measuring stroke metrics - I've tried many (Babolat Play Babolat Pop, Zepp). Surf waves are completely, there are more variables it can pull data from and it doesnt rely on specific very wrist/arm movements (of both wrists if you've got a double handed backhand) to measure surf analytics as it would with tennis.

PlaySight is just about the best system for analysis but will require you going to a kitted out court, if you really want metrics about your game you'd be better off looking into that.

  • Thank you so much for the reply.
I am new to this forum, so I have been following the various topics for a short time.

There doesn't seem to be much hope of having an improvement for Tennis activity, although the explanation given doesn't quite convince me, given the metrics that are being handled for other sports.

...and from what I read, it seems that even the dedicated tennis sensors are not very reliable.

  • Hello,

I have just used the Tennis activity for indoor (epix 2) and I have one remark.

The distance must be measured incorrectly. It is not possible that I have completed just 0.32 km within one hour session- I would expect this value to be around 2km.

Also it is not possible to add the distance metrics to the displayed screen. Looks like it is not available for tennis.

  • The distance must be measured incorrectly.

Of course it is incorrect. The watch has no way of measuring it correctly, especially indoors.

  • I was using the Amazfit watch years ago and it could measure strokes, including how many backhands etc. Garmin should be better?

  • yes, I do understand. But then the incorrect metrics should not be displayed at all, just not to add confusion.

With GPS off the accelerometer is responsible to calculate the distance.

During my tennis activity there were around 3000 steps measured, which seems correct. Cant this be used to show the distance correctly?

Right now I am seeing an incorrect distance graph, also the 'Moving Time' is showing 6 minutes out of the 1 hour session. It is just wrong.

  • the incorrect metrics should not be displayed at all, just not to add confusion.

    Perhaps.

With GPS off the accelerometer is responsible to calculate the distance.

It doesn't work reliably in activities where there are frequent and rapid changes in speed and direction.

  • Same here!

1 hour of tennis activity and 0,35Km recorderd each time.
