Does latest software version damage the F6X?

I recently had an issue with my F6X sapphire following the latest update. The watch got stuck on "loading cartography" and when it finally rebooted it did so as a Tactix. I called Garmin and they kindly replaced the watch. I just recived a brand new F6X but my question is, should I update it to the latest version? Now it's on the 19.30 version. My fear is that it will damage the new watch. I saw other people who had the same issue.

  • Very strange that the update causes that type of problem. It must be some software problem in the updates...

  • No, no it didn't :D

Ya hopefully the new one is all good - kinda bummed because the hardware in this one was flawless, hopefully no issues with the new one.

  • Wow, that is quite a coincidence! I had mine for exactly 2.5 years too. Failed just in time for de FX7 release, though, Garmin replacing it for a new one shot down my programmed obsolescence conspiracy theories. During the night the watch updated on its own to the new 20.30 version, so now it's done.

    Just update. It rarely fails
I said exactly the same thing in this very thread yesterday... Then 24 hours later exactly the same thing happened to my own watch today, bricked it and now it's going back to Garmin for a replacement.

Wouldn't you still say the same thing?  Just because it happened to you doesn't change the fact that it rarely fails. You're just unfortunate to be part of the few.  It's OK to update.

    Who knows ;)

I can only speculate... just seems like there are more reports about this firmware bricking watches than usual. But it could also just be a total fluke, could be due to aging hardware - my watch certainly wasn't young anymore, having bought it summer 2019.

Ya it's definitely not due to planned obsolescence. I give Garmin big kudos for honoring the replacement of watches that are long out of warranty, and it proves they never intended for them to ever fail.
