"Other Activity" as favorite

There are a big number of activities predefined, one of them being "other". I want this "other" activity to show up as a favorite activity.

I have defined it as a favorite activity but it still doesn't show up as a favorite activity (as part of the first activities with a white background).

In the Connect App on my phone it is part of the favorite activities...

Am I missing something or is this just not possible.

Thanks,

Rob.

  • I think it may be a bug in the firmware. What firmware version are you running?

On the 20.20 Beta/Release Candidate firmware I found the following work around:

    1. In Garmin Connect Mobile, remove the 'Other' activity from the 'Favourites'.
    2. On the watch, rename the 'Other' activity to something like 'Other Activity'. ('Other A' will work but in my testing there needed to be a space after 'Other' for the activity to show correctly in 'Favourites'. Just adding letters to the end of 'Other' did not work for me.)
    3. In Garmin Connect Mobile, add the newly renamed 'Other Activity' to 'Favourites'.
    4. On the watch, press 'Start' and 'Other Activity' should appear in the 'Favourites'.
    5. UPDATE: Do not be tempted to rename the activity on the watch back to 'Other'. If you do it will disappear again from the 'Favourites'.

If you are running one of the beta firmwares, report it to [email protected].

  • Thanks for the reply. I am on firmware 19.20.  The workaround did the trick for me.

    Thanks

    Rob.

  • Thanks. This bug has been around for longer than the current betas then.

  • Interesting stuff, good job finding that workaround.

Sounds to me like it isn't a "bug" in the traditional sense, it sounds like Garmin made an intentional decision to make it so "Other" doesn't end up in the Favorites list. Why they would make that decision, I have no idea. But clearly there's a bit of code in there that says "If Activty = Other, then remove it from Favorites"

  • If that was their intension, they did not implement it very well.

With the 'Other' activity named 'Other A' this is how it looks::

    Garmin Connect Mobile for Android

Activities and applications list on f6X

Settings > Activities and Applications on f6X

With the 'Other A' activity renamed to 'Other' this is how it looks (other than the name change GCM looks the same):

In the Activities and Applications list note that 'Walk' has moved up and 'Other' is replaced by a blank space

    Pressing 'Down' button I get

    'Down' button again I get

Continuing on down the list 'Other' is now at the bottom of the list

'Down' button again from 'Bike' I get

In Settings > Activities and Applications 'Other' is at the bottom of the list but the white background implies that is still in the 'Favourites' group

From now on it seems to be impossible to properly  manage the 'Favourites' list using the watch itself. The only way to regain control of the 'Favourites' list on the watch is to first remove the 'Other' activity from the list using Garmin Connect Mobile.

  • I assume the reason is that the 'other' app is not really an actual activity but an app/template for creating your own, custom activity.  The activities you create using 'other' can then be added to favourites as usual.

  • Would be nice if it really was a template, but it is not, you can only use it once: Once you have renamed it, it really is renamed and the original "Other" is not there anylonger so it can not be used to define another activity.

  • I noticed another "small problem" related to this: On the Garmin Connect website, after renaming the "other" activity, the activities still show up as "other". Garmin Connect on my phone however does show the new name.

  • Renaming is not the correct way of doing it. On your watch, scroll through your activities until you reach the + to add a new activity. Then select the 'other' activity/app. It will prompt you for a name. This will create a copy with the new name, without altering the original 'other' activity.

  • Great! Thanks for the tip, something learned today!
