Can't copy files to Garmin fenix 6X Pro on Windows 10

I'm stuck on 19.20 (tried using both Garmin express and forcing wifi updates, as well as having it connected to Garmin Connect app on IOS, but no firmware update available it seams). Want to be on 20.XX.

So I thought I'd try and update to the 20.04 Public beta, but I have problems installing it. When I connect the watch to my Windows 10 computer, it showes up in the file explorer as a portable device, and I can view all the files and folders. I can even create folders, and delete them again. However, I cannot copy any files to the watch. If I drag the GUPDATE.GCD file to the Garmin folder on the watch, nothing happens (also there is no "pluss" sign signifying that a file copy will be done when I hover the file over the folder.) If I right click in the file explorer both the "Paste" and "Paste Shortcut" options are grayed out. Thought it might be a write protection issue, but looking on the folder or device properties, it does not seam like it's recognized as a drive at all (Connected via MTP). Both Read-only and Hidden tickboxes are grayed out, so no way of changing the file or folder attributes.

Tried to update the drivers using the Device Manager, and saw a Garmin driver was an optional update. Did the update and rebooted the PC, but still same issue.

Lastly the file system is recognized as Generic Hierarchical which I assume is the issue. But I don't know how to make windows 10 recognize the correct file system (FAT32??)

Any advice?

  • The current production release firmware is 19.20. The rollout of 20.00 was halted for reasons discussed in other threads.

Are you trying to drag the GUPDATE.GCD file directly from the ZIP archive to the GARMIN folder on the watch?

It is a limitation of Windows that files in compressed archives cannot be dragged and dropped to MTP devices. (The watch is an MTP device.)

To work around this Windows limitation you will need to drag the GUPDATE.GCD file from the ZIP archive to a folder on your computer then drag it to the GARMIN folder on your watch.

  • Learned something new! Was not aware that you could not drag straight form the zip-archive. Worked now, and watch is updating! Thanks!
