Data field "Return to start" straight line

I have just bought my fenix 6X. Love it. My previous Polar had a "Back to Start" data screen where it would show the direction to my starting point and distance (straight line). This was very useful when riding MTB or trail running as you just selected the screen and followed the arrow.

I see in navigation you can back track using actual reverse route or straight line, but it seems you need to get out of the activity to do that.

I find nothing simple like this on my 6X where I can just select a screen in my current activity. I know different makes use different solutions. Any suggestions?

When you long press the 'up' button during an activity, you can choose to navigate back without leaving the activity. You can select whether to take the same route back or to calculate the fastest route.

I don't know about the straight line thing, but I think somehow you can get an arrow pointing to your destination. Not exactly sure though how to get it.

If I remember correctly, pause activity, scroll down, back to start, then select back track or straight line

That's it.. From a 945 LTE, but assume it would look similar.

Getting out of current activity isn't needed at all. You can start and stop navigation as many times as needed, all while continuing recording the current activity. Try long pressing the left middle button during activity and going to the navigation menu.

It is surprising how many people don't know the above is possible. This is where Garmin UX definitely fails.

Right. Just long press Up > Navigation > Back to Start > TRACBACK. No need to get out of the activity or even pause it.

Is not an option with watches with maps, only on those without maps AFAIK.

This is another example of Garmin providing different options to achieve the same end. IMHO that's not a failure in the Garmin UX.

It's a failure. I can't count how many times I had to explain that using the Navigate activity isn't the only way to use a navigation in an activity (here, on Reddit, and on Facebook). By surfacing Navigate activity so prominently Garmin makes users think that is the only way to do navigation. I came from Suunto where I always started navigation via a menu while in an activity, so it wasn't a problem for me to find the same way doing that on Fenix. I think it would be better - less confusion - if the Navigate activity was removed and Garmin UX emphasized using the context menu (long press on UP button) everywhere in the watch UI. It is surprising how many users aren't aware of that context menu.

Appears that it is available for devices with maps. See Garmin IQ add-on Back to Start
