  • Steve, your watch forecasted that you would visit ABC widget later, so it unlocked the altimeter even before doing that. :-)

How could your watch forecast it? The assumption was that if you see an unrealistic change of elevation you will definitely check ABC or Altimeter widget. :-)

Sorry if my naughtyness hurts you.

  • Il n'y a pas de forum en français non plus :-)

And sorry for not having ë :-)

  • I had read about the altimeter issue but really do not use that. I am still running 20.00. I live at the beach. So i went and had my feet in the water and calibrated with DEM. did not try GPS though. I got 9 feet. I was hoping for zero though. Came back home and I was at 30 feet. Could be true. not sure. the morning after with the ABC widget i was at 61 feet :)  I assume the altimeter is a piece of hardware. So it is working or not. Not sure if firmware update can fix taht but i guess if it was working before, it is.

  • The Fenix watch does not have an altimeter. It is not a piece of hardware. What it has is a sensor that measures air pressure. The altitude is derived from either DEM, GPS coordinates and it is calibrated using barometric pressure that is derived from the measurement of air pressure and estimated altitude. A lot of the altitude shown on the watch is algorithm-based.

  • thanks for the explanation. it does make sense then.

  • This is not true. The first time you really need to calibrate the altimeter. But after calibration, only the change in air pressure can be used to calculate the altitude with great accuracy. If the sensor is working properly, then there is no need to calibrate it every time.
But it looks like Garmin is having difficulty with this, installing faulty sensors and trying to solve the problem in software.

  • air pressure changes all the time with weather changes. The watch does not know if the air  pressure changed as a result of altitude change or as a result of weather change. So, as rdeletoile said, the altitude needs to be recalibrated from time to time

  • Automatic altimeter mode (not automatic calibration mode!) perfectly distinguishes pressure changes due to altitude or due to weather changes. My old Fenix 3 have not been calibrated for over a month, and yet they show my altitude to within one meter. But this only works if the pressure sensor is working properly.
I was lucky and in my 6x the pressure sensor is working and it showed the altitude perfectly before the Garmin broke everything by forced auto-calibration.
I am back at 19.21 and again have no problem with the altimeter.

  • By the way, after returning to 19.21, all settings are reset. And now I cannot add the card to the Garmin Pay. But I'm ready to give up using Garmin Pay for the sake of a correct altimeter.
