GoPro Control like Coros

Garmin, I need you to add this please and thank: https://youtu.be/W0FiPxFnu94

Anyone else out there hoping for some action cam through the watch? I primarily use it on my runs to catch some beautiful moments or chance animal encounters with my GoPro.

Having the ability to use my fenix 6 would be amazing, quicker, and more efficient, better chance of catching those cool moments for me to remember. This is a big deal for me, since I have memory issues, helping me catch the times I want to always remember.

Thoughts?

  • I wonder if 3rd party developers have this kind of access to the Bluetooth environment. But yea a remote control app for my canon would be fun. :)

  • Or pick up a cheap Polar v800 which has had this feature built for years...just wear on your other wrist, makes a good backup too.

  • That's a great question! I would love to know if a non affiliated dev would be able to tie fenix and gopro equipment together or if that's locked out by either company.

  • DCRainmaker wrote a post about this today. He seems to think that someone (anyone with the know-how and motivation) could make a CIQ app to do this, there isn't any technical reason preventing it, and that the only reason it hasn't been made yet is because nobody's really tried, for whatever reason. There was apparently one guy who started, but abandoned it when he realized his own very-old Garmin watch didn't support BLE so it wouldn't have worked on his watch, and so had no motivation to continue the project.

    Basically, we need someone who:

    1. Has a newer Garmin watch
    2. Has a GoPro Hero 9 or 10
    3. Has the desire to link those things together
    4. Knows how to do that
    5. Is willing to spend the time making it, for no money

So far, that person hasn't come along... but if anyone here wants to volunteer, I'll happily cheer you on :)

  • In my view, the best people to do that would actually be GoPro, not 3rd party users.

CIQ development is pretty thankless as Garmin are known to change CIQ without notifying app developers, or even breaking stuff then blaming the app. developers (the recent halved cadence bug springs to mind) which just causes needless aggro and spamming from angry users- so it's a pretty thankless task when you are working for free for what will be a handful of users at best.

  • For some reason, companies don't really seem too inclined to make CIQ apps. A couple have (music streamers, Stryd, and maybe a couple others), but most don't seem to be interested. Uber had one for a while, but eventually abandoned it.

All the rest of the apps are made by people like us, who just do it as a hobby.

  • Uber had one for a while, but eventually abandoned it.

I'm amazed they even tried - there just isn't a compelling use-case. Our devices have no autonomous internet connectivity, so chances are you'd be linking to your phone anyway which is better placed to run the app.. Unless you happened to find an open access WIFI point somewhere, without phone connectivity to piggy back to, it's not really going to work.
