No notifications from phone intermittently

I have a Fenix 6x Pro and have just upgraded my mobile phone from a Samsung S9 (Android 10) to a Samsung A52s (Android 11).

On the S9 I received 100% of the phone notifications that I was expecting to (Messenger, SMS, email etc) however since changing phones, whilst I do get notifications for those apps, it's only about 50%-75% of the time, like the connection goes to sleep or something. If I look on the watch it says it is connected to the phone and I'm still well within BT range (1m to 10m typically).

Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue or can suggest a fix? (Could be Garmin, could be Samsung, don't know)

  • There have been several posts about this particularly with Android phones. You need to check that GCM is active all the time and not put to sleep by the OS. GCM needs to be running in the background all the time for notifications to be sent to the watch.

  • Thanks for the reply, the current app settings for GCM is “allow background activity” is turned ON and greyed out, and “Optimise battery usage” is turned OFF.

    I’m not sure if there are any other settings that could effect it at all?

    For reference

    GCM = v4.48

    Fenix 6xPro = v19.20

  • This can also be resolved by turning off the smart notifications for the "Phone" app. It's counter-intuitive, because you would think that turning off "Phone" notifications would turn off the incoming phone call alerts, but it doesn't.

    I think what happens, is the Connect app and the Phone app simultaneously send duplicate incoming call alerts to the watch, confusing the watch and cancelling them both out. By turning off the notifications for the "Phone" app, it will make it so only the Connect app is sending incoming call alerts to your watch, and it should work 100% of the time after that.

  • Thanks for the tip - I’ve just turned that off and will see how it goes.

    I don’t have any hard data, but the notifications “feel” like they have been more reliable lately anyway. Most of the notifications that I was missing would have been email, sms, messenger chat style messages rather than actual phone calls, so the “Phone” app notification may have little relevance for me.

    Since my last post there has been at least one update to GCM and an update to the phone, so it’s possible that either one of those two may have resolved an issue as well.
