MoveIQ double-counting intensity minutes?

When I do an open water swimming activity, MoveIQ seems to detect a swimming activity, and counts both for the purposes of intensity minutes (it doesn't seem to appear anywhere else, certainly not as a stand-alone activity). There might be other counters that are double-counting this as well (not really sure). I think I've had this happen as well when I've started a bushwalk activity, moveiq has logged walking somewhere as well.

  • I have disabled MoveIQ because of the double counting. It started after the last official update, 19.20.

  • Double counting is an old bug that I've observed since the Fenix 5,  in my case with cycling.

I ended up turning off MoveIQ. Its not a new bug or a 19,20 bug.

  • Are you certain this is a bug?

I was under the impression that it intentionally counts vigorous activity as twice as many minutes, because the health recommendation is 150min moderate or 75mins vigorous activity per week.

  • Are you certain this is a bug?

Yes, quite certain. MoveIQ is supposed to detect an activity when you haven't actually activily decided to record it.

But quite often a parellel MoveIQ event appears alongside the recorded activity, so the intensity minutes are double counted.

In my case during  a bike ride, pausing to go to the shops, then resuming, usually a MoveIQ event appears at the time the activiity was resumed.

  • Are you sure that it's actually double counting your intensity minutes when you look at your daily and weekly totals? There was a thread about this before and while the intensity minutes may show up twice on your list of activities for the day in the intensity minutes section of Garmin Connect, when you actually check the the total for the day the Move IQ activities do not double up your total minutes. Add up the total intensity minutes for the all of the activities listed including the Move IQ and compare it to your daily total and they are not the same. The app recognizes the overlap and does not actually double count the minutes. I just verified this again on the app on my phone.

  • Yes, quite sure. Deletimg the phantom MoveIQ event that duplicates the recorded activity causes Gsrmin Connect to recalcualate using only the recorded activity, discarding the additions caused by the duplicate.

  • That's interesting. It must not be a consistent error with everyone then. Here is a screenshot from my intensity minutes from last Wednesday where a Move IQ running event overlapped my recorded running activity and the summary shows that the minutes were going not double counted.

  • So you see the phantom erroneous duplicate (which is an old bug that carried over from the Fenix 5) but not the duplicated insensity minutes?

The only reason I can think why we see different behaviour is because I disabled MoveIQ due to the duplicate bug and I suspect maybe Garmin Connect may no longer double count if this only happened for you on Wednesday - my MoveIQ has been disabled for the past few weeks as I got sick of manually deleting the phantom MoveIQ duplicate of the type seen in your screenshot.

But obviously the erroneous MoveIQ detection bug appears still to be present and going strong.

  • Yes experienced this too, got a move IQ biking during a recorded biking activity. When I have time I'll check about doubled intensity minutes.

I think it happend to me after I had the activity on pause for a few minutes for a stop in a store on the track.

  • Yes, the duplicate MoveIQ event during a recorded activity is a really old Fenix 5 line bug that has never been fixed.

Here is an erroneous MoveIQ event for biking from from 13 months ago when I still was using the Fenix 5 Plus! Also have them for other activities, but it's almost always cycling, generally after I have paused then resumed the  recorded event is a good way to reproduce the bug - the MoveIQ often but not always starts after the resume.
