Firmware corruption - how to reinstall core firmware - hard reset fails to help

Last night about 7:15pm, my 6x Sapphire appeared to be working normal.  At least it was showing the time on  the watchface that I had been using since the release of the 6x.

By the time I reach home after a two hour drive, something had gone wrong.

-My first observation was that the watch face was on one of the stock watch faces.

-Second observation was that the time was not accurate

-Third observation was the BT connectivity with the watch was not working.

I spent the next couple hour trying soft resets, hard, resets.   Removing the watch from the Garmin Connect mobile and re-adding the watch.  I even wiped cache/data on the android phone and reinstall GC mobile.   Nothing but nothing would get solid BT connectivity.  All I can characterize this was, the BT connectivity partially worked.  During "new device" setup the phone and watch would notice each other, but without fail during the initial sync, BT connectivity would be lost and remain lost.

During this time, I started to suspect something faulted in the watch. I was hoping (and I am still hoping) that somehow the firmware got corrupted somehow.  Though I had no activities, not was the watch actively doing anything on that drive home.   I attempted a factory reset from the menu in the watch, selected yes to remove all settings and data.  And it didnt work.  After the restart the history of my activities was still there.  However, the watch was not acting very odd.  locking up.  Trying to enter into the watch menus was failing.  button navigation seemed to work, but nothing was being displayed.

At this point, if its not something seriously corrupted, then the watch just has some type unusual to my years of having Garmins, type of hardware fault.

Before sending the watch back to have it checked out, or replaced for a different unit.  I thought I would try to re-install some of the firmware.  so I have two questions.

1// anyone else have anything equally unusual with their 6x before?  did you fix it somehow?

2// I am guessing I could use the procedure to install beta firmware, but instead of actually installing beta, I could install the last known/good firmware.  Would that work?
I am still looking, but have not yet found, a post that describe how to basically re-install everything from scratch. with a good/clean software firmware package.

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions

  • don't mess up with the watch, contact garmin.

they will instruct you to follow steps, follow them blindly and meticulously even if you did them previously, then report to them what happened.

that's the fastest way to either a full recovery, or to get a rma/repair ticket.

Don't mess up with beta firmware, stick with what you have and stop experiment, that's the fastest path to an happy end ;)

  • Ended up in long chat with support.   I think even support was confounded by the erratic behavior. Tried to get me to connect up to garmin express (which historically rarely works for me with any garmin watch I've had on a windows 10 pc).

long story short..   even thought its out of warranty.. they are treating it like its warranty..  so I'm sending it back, and they are sending me refurbished one.

  • Glad to hear they are replacing it for you.  Kudos Garmin!

  • I am having the EXACT same issues with my Marq Adventurer (which I think runs the same software as the 6X?)

I first noticed it was running slow/losing time. When I tried to sync over Bluetooth it didn’t work. Removed the device and tried re-pairing, and after the initial “recognition” it won’t complete the pairing process.

I’m also now stuck as soft and hard resets haven’t resolved the issue. Is getting Garmin to replace it the only option now? Mine at least is still within warranty.

    kind regards

  • Not sure if its the only answer  -- I never did find good/clean/explained way how to try and install some core/known good firmware.  I dont want to say my F6x was bricked, since it would power on. But by gosh, it was majorly fracked up.   The replacement has been working well enough.  Good luck to you

  • Oh man, I hope mine gets replaced too. Literally ran into the same problem today. The only difference is mine actually came back to life in a stealth mode and wouldn’t sync over bluetooth. Now just stuck in Loading Maps. It really sucks that such an expensive device can just die in two in a half years. I’ve emailed Garmin Spain, lets see what they offer.

  • I’m having exactly the same issues.  Someone figured out how to solve?

  • Same here...
Currently waiting for Garmin Support to get back to me.
I'd advise you to reach out to support

  • Same issue with my 6x solar.  I tried soft reboots, rebooting the program on the computer, turning it on and off... nada.  It froze up once, and I had to shut it down to reboot. However, now some of the functionality is missing, and it tells me to use Garmin Connect (with no luck).  I deleted it from Garmin Express, and Garmin Express can't find the watch either.   Garmin support is closed until Monday so I wait until then
