Garmin 6x Sapphire vs. Coros Vertix 2

Last Friday, I received my brand new Coros Vertix 2. I do like Garmin devices, but since the 6X is pretty old now, I just needed to get a new gadget.

My impressions so far:

Garmin Fenix 6x Sapphire

- Good battery life but probably worse than the vertix 2
- Charging speed seems to be much lower
+ Can shows the running pace
- From time to time very strange values for heartbeat (roughly 20-30 bpm too high) for optical heartbeat sensor
+ Reliable heartbeat measurement over the day outside of activities
+ Nice web site with lots of information
+ Good notifications on the watch, for example related to whatsapp notifications
+ I can respond to some notifications, for example via whatsapp
+ I really like the physical buttons to operate the watch
+ Community forum where you can share experiences and bug reports
+ Running course proposals (automatic routing)
+ Pretty good running route planner within the webapp
+ Lap time via voice
+ Pretty OK for serpentines
- Sometimes very bad optical HR measurements
- Sometimes, there is a severe battery drain - ConnectID-Apps? Watchfaces?
+ You can operate the watch under almost all conditions
+ Firmware upgrade takes roughly one minute, upload of the firmware to the watch happens in the background

Coros Vertix 2

+ Maybe better battery life? I received it with 82% on Friday. Now on Monday, it says 71%. I did runs of roughly 1 - 1.5 hours each day
+ Better charging speed (roughly 20 % when the 6x only got 10 %)
- Cannot show the running pace (probably a bug. There is a field labeled "pace" but it shows strange values - maybe half the pace?)
+ Reliable heartbeat measurement for optical heartbeat sensor within activities (up until now)
- Some gaps in heartbeat measurement over the day outside of activities
- Crude web site with only basic information (kind of activity overview, but no details)
- Sometimes strange notifications, for example "updating whatsapp messages" - pretty useless
- No way to respond to notifications
- I don't like "the wheel" to scroll through the menues
- No community forum at all
- No running course proposals
- No running route planner
- No lap time via voice
- Cuts serpentines at least when not using dual frequency
- Sometimes very bad optical HR measurements
- Sometimes, there is a severe battery drain - Firmware 2.59
- Unable to stop a run when it is very cold (OK after warming up the watch)
- Firmware upgrade takes up to 20 minutes (10 minutes and more), upload of the firmware to the watch happens in the foreground

These are my first impressions. Typically, I do prefer newer devices. Currently, I do like my 6x more than the Vertix 2.

Please drop me a note in case you're interested in more details. I'll update my findings once I've done more with the new watch.

Please note: These are my personal opinions and findings. Maybe I just don't know how to use the watches...

  • Interesting, the difference in GPS tracks is pretty big for me.  Coros is much smoother, yes, but it really follows the track I ran well.  Like I'm running in the left lane of a road, and it shows me in the left lane.  Where Garmin is maybe in the yards of the houses I'm running by with spike in and out of the road.

On the EvoLab, that sucks.  I've seen posts of their Facebook page about people having trouble unlocking it.  You have to do so many runs and they have to be within some HR range.  If your HR is too low or too high, it doesn't go to unlocking Evolab.  The HR range is pretty broad though if I recall.

One trick that might work if you want to try it.  Evolab is independent of your watch.  You can upload a .zip file that has past runs in .fit format and upload them on Coros's website.  That's what I did, I got my entire history out of Strava and then uploaded to Coros.  That unlocked Evolab before I even did one run with the Vertix 2.

  • Just switched from apex pro to fenix 6X sapphire. I agree with your first impressions.

    coros ( 2 years intesive usage ):

    - OHR useless, inacurate  ( might be an individual specific issue :) )

    - compass, inacurate ( hard to correctly read correct direction when navigating at crossing )

    - 50m delay when navigating

    - very bad screen contrast

    But

+ gps accuracy  and fault free wooo effect when comparing to fenix 6 :(

    + battery life

  • I am using a Coros Pace 2 alongside my Fenix 6 Pro.

I concur with OHR, it's OK for indoor riding, for running not so good.

Yes, GPS accuracy is very good - instant pace far better for starters.

Battery life - it's OK until you start using external sensors. For indoor riding, with the same sensors attached, I find I use more power on the Pace 2 than Fenix for the same ride. Curious if Vertix has that - it's something reviewers seem not to notice (or probably are too scared to say) but the extra battery drain with external sensors is REALLY obvious on the Pace 2.

The Vertix 2 is a complete non-starter for me due to no ANT. Didn't need to read more after that when it was announced.

  • Hi guys,

I see that few of you have Fenix 6X and Coros Vertix 2.

I have Fenix 6X and I like strap from Vertix 2.

Please, could somebody confirm that strap from Vertix 2 fits to Fenix 6X? Give it a try and make some picture?

It will help me a lot. I would like to avoid to buy new strap what will does not fit to my Fenix 6X.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Nobody has any answer? Please, just to try it... Thanks a lot!

  • I do have both watches. Unfortunately, I cannot switch the straps at the moment. I bought a cheap 10 EUR strap for the Fenix a year ago or so and this one is now kind of stuck. You cannot remove it, since the quick release mechanism is blocked. I'll post an update once I got this fixed.

  • I finally got the cheap straps removed - now they are broken ones ;)

Although the widths of the straps are equal, the COROS strap does NOT work @Fenix6XPro.

    - The locking mechanism doesn't fit in completely
    - The strap is too thick at the end

  • Hi,

It's a shame, because the Vertix2 strap design is great...

    However, you saved me money!

Thanks a lot for the test!

  • Today, I finally decided to return my Coros Vertix 2 to the seller. I updated the firmware of the watch several times but my issue related to the running pace was not solved within the last months. I didn't even get any feedback aside from the German team stating "please send it back, we cannot repair it". So I'm sending the watch to them now.
