What does the 'Alert Tones' toggle control?

Couldn't find an explanation in the manual

It is your control whether or not your watch will alert you with an audible beep for any alert you have setup in or out of an activity.

It toggles ... alert tones.

Alert tones can be set to OFF, During Activity, or ON.

Or am I missing something?

Well, I guess what I'm wondering is what are alert tones? In what situations would an alert tone be generated?

Lap alert, Heart Rate Alert, Distance Alert, Elevation Alert, Time Alert, Cadence Alert, Calories Alert, Proximity Alert, Drink Alert, Eat Alert, Turn Around Alert, Go Home Alert, etc.
