Running Distance Usually Short?

Hello,

New Fenix 6 Pro owner here.  I've noticed that when using the device to record a Run activity, the distance measured is always a little shorter than Strava on my phone records the same run.

I've set the GPS to record every second, and looking at the track on a satellite map, GPS accuracy seems quite acceptable.  Certainly the line sometimes deviates from the road a bit, but for a watch, accuracy seems darn good.  The GPS course follows the actual route, turns around at the correct places etc.

So what I don't understand is, with these sorts of small deviations, I would expect that if anything, the watch would be measuring a slightly LONGER distance than Strava (which is using the better antenna in a cell phone, and therefore shows a straighter track with fewer deviations).

So why is the Fenix measuring a shorter distance?

I've found other threads discussing this but they seem to mostly refer to the "trail run" activity.  I'm seeing this behavior on the regular "run" activity.

Thanks for any insight!

  • Hehe! Will see ;) Does the FR235 have an accelerometer?

  • Will focus on my own data field, im working on going through a lot of different algorithm settings too see which works best for me.

Earlier i did som tests while running with the Bike activity and that worked rather well regarding pace. Probably due to that the accelerometer was not used then. But that was in earlier sw versions. Havent tested that lately.

  • Does the FR235 have an accelerometer?

    Yes

  • It is discussed in several threads both here and in the German forum.

And usually the same few people responding...

The number of threads/posts is not necessarily indicative of a major or systemic problem.

In the German forum, they are different people than in the English forum. And even in the English forum, it's not just the same people.

I agree. There are certainly many who have not yet noticed the problem, since they are rather hobby runners with a fenix 6. The majority of professionals will not use a fenix 6 for running or even triathlon.

  • So today Garmin told me to do a Recovery Run, too be honest I find running at this slow speed far harder than runner faster!

So I dropped my cadence and stride length - and (@AndersB) I also paid attention to what my wrist and arms were doing - seems my hands are very steady around chest height about 6 inchs or so in front of where you'd wear a heart rate monitor.

So interestingly running at these slow speeds, it's the first time I have been able to get a large increase on distance when exported to GPX. See below.

Here are the previous results on this course for comparison

And today's run - much slower, much lower cadence and stride length - the device reported 0.02 miles less than the runs above which is 32 meters over about 5k assuming I ran the exact same route as before (I tried) - the exported GPX reports 3.18 miles which is 96 meters longer than the FIT distance of 3.12 miles.

I do not know what the 'correct' measurement is, as this is not a measured route for me to say what is more accurate, although obviously my device accuracy has been validated in races previously, just 8 days ago in fact.

So maybe running speed or running form has something to with it? On races, I run much much faster with better form and higher cadence, and do not see shortage or major gains on export to GPX on measured races with known and accurately measured distances as I have already posted. But I don't run slow on those and they never come up short in FIT and gains when exported to GPX tend to be almost nothing, even on a half marathon.

I'ld be interested to know if your running course is more straight or twisty.

It's quite straight, going west to east than east to west - only the last approx 0.1 of a mile has a 90 degree turn, then a U turn to get the reported distance around the 5k mark.

EDIT: Easier to show than describe!

  • Many thanks.
And I assume you're running with mostly constant pace, not variable pace.

No, actually the opposite on this run, I found it really hard to run that slow, and I kept going faster than target, Garmin workout would tell me off, and I'd try to drop back down to the target speed, so the pacing is pretty all over the place.
