Hear rate only for exercise (in my case running)

I see it is possible to disable heart rate monitoring in the watches settings, but then however it is also disabled when I want to exercise (run) - can I somehow switch off heart rate monitoring when wearing the watch in day-to-day life and only have it being active when I actually start to run/hike/cycle/... etc?

  • The HR sensor is a pretty low power drain in 24/7 mode, if that is your concern. You should get 2-3 weeks battery life (depending on the model) even with HR on.

Also, turning off HR monitoring disables a number of features on the device, like sleep tracking, recovery, stress and body battery. It kinda defeats the purpose of wearing it in day-to-day life.

And if battery life is a concern, there are a number of other settings you could use to reduce power consumption.

However, if you really want to do this, you could achieve this through running the Battery Saver mode all the time, and setting up a power mode for your running that turns the HR on.

  • It is easy to get that. I would add to mcalista's commet:

You can disable HR readings in general (through the settings); then, you can create a new Battery Saver mode, called for example 'Activity'; in such Battery Saver you can specify to enable HR.

Then, you must configure each activity to use that Battery Saver mode, and that is
