Request: ability to hide weight / calorie burn data in-watch and in-app?

Hey all, random feature request from talking to a couple of people recently about their Garmin watches or who were shopping around for a smartwatch - it'd be amazing if a user could globally hide weights and calories across the GC ecosystem (watch, GCM, GC Web, etc.).

Would anybody else or their partner find this useful? It's a little out of left field, but for folks trying to track performance/[athletic] recovery but have had struggles with food in the past, it'd be awesome to just keep certain metrics "out of sight, out of mind" intentionally.

Obviously not like child-locking a display setting, but just something helpful as a global user profile setting?

  • I'm not sure I see the value in hiding calorie burn data, why wouldn't anyone want to see that? I can't envision any scenario (even someone with a previous/current eating disorder) where seeing your calories burned would be a negative thing. And calorie intake isn't even a thing on Connect, unless you sync it with MyFitnessPal, so if you don't want calorie intake info then just don't connect it to a MyFitnessPal account.

Weight, I can understand a bit more. But it's extremely easy to just not look at it. First of all, the watch can't show you your weight even if you wanted it to (for some reason), you can only see it in the Connect app, and you absolutely CAN hide it there. Simply remove the weight widget from the daily summary screen.

I'm with C.sco on this one.  In fact, I would think anyone who struggled with their eating habits would find this info beneficial and motivational so they can reach their goals.  Remember the old adage, "Out of sight. Out of mind.".  If weight control were an issue, I'd definitely want to keep an eye on it.

  • I'm not sure I understand completely, but can imagine that people don't always want to see reminders of issues that are in the past.

Weight is a factor used in many algorithms, not just in calorie calculation, so you have to enter a valid value at least once and keep it up to date if it changes significantly.

You can configure GCM and GC web to not show weight and activity calories on the dashboard (readers, correct me if I'm wrong, haven't used those in a long time.) Disabling activity tracking would probably get rid of daily calorie statistics. Or you could consider changing to an offline app like GoldenCheetah, import your FIT files directly in that, to only review activities.

I would like an option like this for another reason. I use my watch for sports, but also for tracking car travel and boating. Calories not needed, can be left out. It would be nice to have a configurable app that logs what the user wants to have. Maybe there is such an app already, maybe someone can develop one.

  • Hi! I had a similar question and found this very helpful thread on Reddit—the response there says “Swiping the weight card to the left and then confirming should do the trick.” Start by going to “my day,” then click “edit my day.” From there you should be able to edit which things are shown in the list. I tried it and it worked for me.
