SW Version 19.20 Update

Hey,

My Fenix 6 watch updated to 19.20 software version.

Since the update when recording/doing an activity (running or cardio) my training effect and calorie count are nearly non-existent (very low).

Two almost identical runs:

First run (pre update) is Exercise Load 125 and Aerobic 3.4

Second run (post update) is Exercise Load 13 and Aerobic 1.0

Total time difference between the two runs was 4 seconds and average HR was 2 beats difference.

Today I did a 30 Minute Wattbike at 40Km/Hour and 6x3 Rounds of Boxing and my Exercise Load is 1 with no Aerobic or Anaerobic benefit.

Can someone advise on how to remedy this?

Regards,

Scott

  • First thing I would suggest is to double check that your heart rate zones including lactate threshold and max heart rate were not somehow screwed up in the upgrade process.  If those look ok, then give your watch a restart by holding down the top right Light button for about 20 seconds until the watch shuts off.

  • Thanks for the response Eric. I checked the Zones on all three workouts on the Connect App and they are all identical from Z1 to Z5 and for both runs I spent most time in Z4 (Threshold) 141-157bpm. My Max Heart Rate is 176bpm and Fenix6 Zone percentages look normal and aligned. Z5 (90-100%), Z4 (80-90%), Z3 (70-80%), Z2 (60-70%) and Z1 (50-60%). the FTHP is blank, not sure of its ever been different. Ive reset the watch and will see what happens on the next activity.

  • Hi Scott,

I have the same. From one moment on the next (just with a software update in between) I don't have anaerobic training effect, but also no performance condition, training status reordings and vo2max updates. Yesterday did a 170 km ride with 1000 meter elevation at 30 km/hr average. No way I can do this with 0.0 anaerobic training effect.

Does your training status still update? (Graph figure in the app)

By the way, i did all the usual things already. Reset, hard reset, uninstall and install connect app...

  • Hey,

I got in touch with Garmin and they said they 'believed' it was a SW bug (didnt confirm yes/no). I asked when a fix would be in place and they couldn't confirm a time period (days > weeks > months).

I got hold of the beta version of 19.20 and in the file directory is a roll back file for beta testers and I dropped that file into the watch and I'm now using 16.70 SW version and all is good.

The watch resets to factory defaults so I had to set it up again but the Garmin Connect app maintained its history which is good.

I did have to faff about a little bit as the watch got caught in a loop loading some files but just did the watch reset (switch on > hold top right and bottom right buttons > after first beep release top right > after second beep release bottom right > then power the watch off and on).

    https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=15160

Right down the bottom of the page are the installation instructions and I only followed step 7. Connect your watch to a PC and open windpws explorer and you'l see the watch connected, click on it and you'll enter the watch folder/file directory and can see the correct folder(s). I opened another Windows Explorer for the download and then just copied the gupdate.gcd file across.

    Step 7:

If you would like to revert to the last public release software, drop the gupdate.gcd file found in the System_Backdate_v*** folder in the \GARMIN directory NOTE: If you revert to an older version of software, all of your settings will be reset to defaults.

  • Hi Scott and others,

Today I got my training status back. It has to do with the external heart-rate strap I'm using (polar sense). Without the external heart-rate sensor everything is back to normal. Bit embarrassing for Garmin that the changelog says they fixed something: Fixed an issue where some training metrics were not updated after downloading stored heart rate from a capable chest strap. Not for us they didn't. So you're right, it's a software bug.

  • I use a chest strap too, are you going to persevere with the wrist monitor?

My heart rate etc was the same pre and post 19.20 it just didnt update the loads etc.

I'm not convinced that this will get fixed fast so may stick with 16.70

  • For now I will keep it as is. I'm not convinced they can fix things at all... :/
