Best way to recover when erroneously transitioning during Triathlon

I did a triathlon today, and accidentally pressed the lap key during my bike. This resulted in half of my cycle not being recorded, and a T2 transition of 15 min  I ended up stoping the current activity, and starting a new one. But frustratingly, all my statistics are now inaccurate.

I know this was my fault, but it happens so easily… I’d just like thoughts on what I could do if this happens in the future.

  • One thought may be set up a multisport activity of run/swim/bike (or whatever order) and then set repeat on.

So lets say you;re on the swim (the middle) and accidentally transition to bike, pressing the lap then could go through back to swim. The swim activity will be slightly mangled, but the others should be ok

  • Yes, a common error. If you want to zip and post the fit file here, we can fix it for you. Some software, such as Fit File Repair Tool, has the ability to fix erroneous button presses during a multi-sport activity.

  • I’d just like thoughts on what I could do if this happens in the future.

I agree that it is way too easy to make that mistake, without any way to undo it. So this is what I'd do next time:

Assign one of your hot keys as "Next sport". Instead of starting the triathlon profile, just start the open water swim profile. When you're out of water, hold the "next sport" key and select "Other" for transition. Just before starting the bike leg, hold the "next sport" key again, and select "Bike", and so on. The downside is that it requires extra interaction with the watch, which can be distracting during hectic transitions, but with little practice the distraction can be brought to a minimum, and it becomes even less of a problem on long distance races, where a loss of few extra seconds is not that much of an issue. Also please note, that the majority of the interaction can be done some time in advance, for example holding the next sport key and selecting the next sport can be done several minutes in advance, and then the confirmation of the selection can be done with just one button click at the right time.

This method drastically reduces the risk of making a mistake. I've executed it successfully on several occasions.

  • So had my own issue with the 'lap'-button [how-to-correct-push-of-lap-button-during-a-workout].

Found others complaining without getting an answere so I already submitted the idea via https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas.

AS says, there is software which has the ability to correct this.

Maybe not helpful for recovery but more in term of prevention is the remark made by Bitty:

"What I've done on my Fenix 5+ is this: I've disabled the lap key from the activity settings (Lap key: off), but then assigned it as a hotkey when the back/lap key is long-pressed (System, Hot Keys, Hold BACK: Lap). That way I can use the lap key, but avoid accidental presses."

  • I haven't read the other replies but here is what I do

    1. create a custom tri profile

    2. make it swim+bike+run+bike+run...etc

    3. if you make a mistake you simply lapp through to the next correct section.

    4. this involves easier keypresses than what I imagine some of the other solutions will be, in a race condition it's simple to press LAP

  • Something I've used before is enable the Lock Keys option in the multisport settings. Then you need to use your hot key function to unlock the watch before Lapping, then a few seconds later the watch relocks. Limits ability to scroll screens and it's one more step for each Lap, but adds a layer of security.

  • The right solution for Garmin would be to implement a partial lock - a lock that prevents making accidental changes to an activity such as pausing it  or using lap button but doesn't block other functions of the watch e. g. changing data screens. This is how locking works on Suunto, and how I'd prefer it to work on Garmin.
