Where did you see such information to make that speculation?
It makes more sense to me .
Why you pay $60 to them were you can drag and drop map data with no cost

The way it currently works is the way it has been in the past for probably all of their outdoor devices. In my opinion it is pure speculation just to give Garmin a bad reputation and start a new "blame Garmin thread"...
Garmin maps in Fenix devices are based on OSM which is a non-profitable organisation. Garmin can decide to changes the rules however I think Garmin makes profit by selling the devices and not offering something that is already free which is included in their devices. Also, the competition has started with their mapping capabilities, so....hopefully, they will improve instead of restricting.
It's good to know that Garmin keeps updating their maps. I would say that with the preloaded maps is enough for most of us. If you want more details you can still pay for maps to an external source.
In conclusion, I would say, right now I don't see this kind of change happening, at least soon.
No i don't blame Garmin at all they want to make money like every other companies and they have the wright to restrict us to sideload third-party maps to there devices and yes I'm speculating just like you do.
I do NOT think they will do this! Years ago, I had a garmin gps routing device where you had to buy all the maps from garmin. Some people found out how to load OSM maps, but it was quite difficult. I think they opened up for these maps in order to get a greater market share.
But in the end, this is all imagination. Time will tell. Maybe the moon will crash into the Atlantic Ocean
A decision that would make absolutely no sense given they're the only manufacturer with maps that allow extra ones.
