Garmin Connect Battery Drain

Any chance of fixing this Garmin?  It doesn’t happen often (although I’ve seen it many times in the last 5+ years) but when you’re out on the trails not checking your phone it’s a bit of a distaster  to find Garmin Connect has eaten most of your battery.

  • Garmin Connect is supposed to continue running in the background. Running for 21 hours in the background doesn't mean it is guilty of heavy battery drain. You need to look at the battery percentage used by the app during that time.

    It's over 17 hours since my last full charge and GCM has used just 1.4% of the battery, despite running in the background for 16 hours and foreground for 12 minutes.

  • Agreed, but the unusual thing to note is the 100% background activity for the last 24 hours on my phone (the pale blue line hits 100% for pretty much every hour), and this *is* caused by Garmin Connect.  Combined with the fact that every time this happens (i.e. 100% background usage for each hour with Garmin Connect being the only entry for several of those hours), the battery drains very fast (the example above shows about 50% of the battery drained in around 6 hours - most of which the phone was in my pocket - not usual), I do think there's an issue with GC.

    For reference, the last few hours on that chart show Garmin Connect at 20%, 29%, 48%, 53% etc.

    i have 1day 11h background usage and lost 20,2%

    its seems that a lot compare to the picture above

  • I'm afraid I don't know what is "normal" or if there is a solution for you. I only know from my own experience with Samsung phones (Galaxy S10+ and Note 20 Ultra) and multiple Fenix watches (2 x 3HR, 5X+, 2 x 6X Pro Solar) that the background battery use is modest and does not cause concern for me. Yours looks very high, for sure, but I have no idea why that would be. Sorry.

    My phone was charged to 100% last night and, in 12.5 hours since charging, Garmin Connect has used 0.4% battery. I have notifications enabled for all my phone apps and I use DND during sleeping hours. I never use Live Track.

    even my google play services or only 4,8% drain

    anyone else know how to fix this or where can i contact garmin about this problem?

  • Same problem here a week or so ago. I completely disabled the Weather permission and it seems to have fixed things. Obvious negative is I no longer get weather widget updates on my watch, but it's better than killing my phone battery. Planning to enable again soon and see if it's sorted itself.

  • i dit this yesterday and it seems a lot better now i test today also to see if its really solved

    Try to go to settings/apps/connect/storage and clear data, then uninstall connect and reboot the phone. Reinstall connect and login, then select ok when asked to reconnect to the watch.

  • You can also try to deny Garmin connect app to always use location.
