I have searched and found a somewhat similar question but it was from over 2 years ago, with the 5x. I have a 6x Pro Solar and recently updated to the 16.70 firmware. To this point (about the last 8 months, as long as I have owned it), I have loaded courses in the same way to the watch - downloading a .gpx from AllTrails via the browser on my iphone, sending that file to Connect (on the phone), sending it to the watch, and then synching. This has been flawless and although it takes a couple steps, it has been great to make changes in the field, if I didn't have a course loaded beforehand.
Since 16.70, however, I have run into a problem loading courses, either via the above method, or the (new to me) method of using a (Mac) desktop and synching via Connect and Garmin express. It's frustrating because the course file's map/data (from AllTrails) shows up in Connect on the desktop perfectly fine and is viewable, and in fact (as a test) I can download a .gpx from the file I just imported, and use the new .gpx to build the same perfectly viewable course, with accompanying data - this is all on the desktop. Regardless of uploading to the watch via desktop or all on mobile, I now get courses that show up on the watch with the correct title, but not only do they NOT have a normal/usable map (they all show the map image in the photo), they have no accompanying elevation data (images attached). In addition, the only way I can get these 'weird' courses off the watch is to use Connect on the desktop and delete it from there, and then synch to pull it from the watch. If I try to delete off the watch directly, it simply reverts from the course back to the course list menu, with the entry still there. I should point out that any courses that were on the watch already (I have about 30) are all displaying and acting normally.
I am running the latest Garmin Express, and again to this point I have had zero issues with loading or using courses. I have tried reloading maps, to no avail. I have tried soft resets which also did not work. I did most recently also try a 'Reset to Defaults' (but keep user data), and this appeared to fix the issue - I was able to pull in three new courses (via the mobile method I mentioned above) afterwards.....but now 'poof' it is back to loading 'weird' courses, and all the behavior I mention in the paragraph above.
This seems so random, and I see very little on the web (literally nothing recently) about this - am I missing something?
