Sync Google navigation from IPhone

Hello,

when I start Google navigation on my iPhone SE2020, I would like to synchronize it automatically to my Fenix 6. I have tried many apps (Maps Nav, Navigation, ...) but they seem to work only with Android but not with Apple? Do you have any recommendations how I can do the sync?

Thank you!

Fabian

  • iOS is much more locked down by Apple than Google has chosen to do with their Android mobile OS. Your only control of the APPS you are using on your iPhone, is your Settings > Notifications menu on you iPhone. Specifically, the bottom section for the Notifications settings for the APP you are trying to have notifications pushed by iOS to your watch, is the only impacting setting.

Under where the APP says, "Options" and "Show Previews" being set to Always (Default) is the only meaningful control you have given to you by Apple iOS.

  • Thank you for your reply. I am not looking for a way how to sync Google notifications to my Fenix, I need the complete navigation including map. I would prefer an automatic sync once I started Google Maps navigation on my iPhone, but I would also be fine with a little workaround, e.g. some little actions like opening an App on my Garmin. What is the best approach?

  • What you are describing is not a compatibility between an iPhone and a Fenix 6 series watch.

  • Means there is no way no plan a route ad-hoc on my iPhone (e.g. in Google Maps) and then sync it to my Garmin watch? I need this feature in the city for my commute bike rides. I don't want to buy a ride case for my smart phone if I have a high-tech smart watch on my wrist :)

  • You have many ways to create a route but not by using Google maps. Use Google or use the search at the top of the forums. There are many long threads going over all the various ways to create a course to use for a run or bike etc that you can then navigate through your watch.

  • Thanks for your reply Chris. I was already using Google but did not find an easy and fast solution to plan a route on my iPhone and sync it. Komoot seems to require WLAN and therefore cannot be used ad-hoc. Can you recommend another solution which works out of the box?

  • In GCM (iPhone at least) Training - Courses - Create Course

Then save the course and send it to your watch.

  • You can create a course on Garmin Connect Mobile and send it to the watch over Bluetooth. I just tried a simple route with a start and end point and let GCM plot the route between the two. You can plot intermediate points too, if you want to fine tune the course.

Alternatively you can use Garmin Connect Web to plan your route and it will appear in GCM to send to your watch.

  • Thanks for your replies   and @philipshambrook

    @all
In Garmin Connect Mobile, there seems to be no possibility to search for a specific address. Unfortunately I have no possibility to use Garmin Connect Web while I am on the move.

Let me describe the use case in a bit more detail. I am living in Berlin and always go by bike from A to B. After work, a friends texts me if I want to meet for dinner at his favorite restaurant. He sends me the name of the restaurant and the district (which I would usually search in my Google Maps app). I could use my mobile phone to create a navigation within 10 seconds and navigate to the location. But it's uncomfortable and dangerous holding the phone in one hand while driving my bike. I could buy a bike mount. But wait - I have the most expensive smart watch which could even navigate me to the top of Mount Everest - so let's use that one. Whats the fastest and easiest way how I could navigate with my Fenix to my appointment?

As I do active sports and I cannot bulk delete routes on my Fenix - hence there are many saved routes on my Garmin. It's no problem when I am planning a sports activity (I will remember the route name). For the ad-hoc navigation to the restaurant I would prefer if I can navigate immediately instead of saving a route and then search and load it immediately afterwards.

I am pretty sure that I am just missing the right app or workaround. Looking so much forward to your thoughts.

  • You can use the Garmin Explore app. There you can search for addresses and start the navigation on the fenix with the "navigate" button if the watch and app are paired via Bluetooth.

Alternatively, you can download the app "sendpoints" from the IQ Appstore.
