Concept2Logbook and Garmin Connect

Hi all.

Hoping someone can clarify a few things for me regarding the C2 logbook/ErgData and Garmin Connect.

I tried to post in the C2 forum but it just disappears waiting to be checked by a moderator and nothing is happening on that front

Anyway. I’m due to receive my RowErg this week and will be wanting the data to sync to my Garmin Connect account so as to link in with my other training data and to feed into my ‘Training Status/Load’.

Having read Concept2‘s info on connecting the ecosystems up I’m a little confused.

As the Fenix 6 has the ‘Row Indoor’ profile and can also make use of the PM5 as a sensor so I believe my options are:

1: Link accounts. Don’t record the workout in my watch and just have the C2Logbook send the data over however this won’t update ‘Training Status’.

2: Use the ‘Indoor Row’ activity profile on my Fenix 6. Accept some data will be missing/need manually adding, but this will feed into ‘Training Status’.

Have ErgData just upload to the C2Logbook alone and not sync to Garmin to avoid duplicating workouts.

3: Connect the PM5 to my Fenix 6 as a sensor and get all the data and have it be used to adjust my ‘Training Status’.

However this whilst sounding the best option leaves me confused after reading C2’s post about it as it states…

Workouts recorded with ANT+ FE-C will be included in Garmin’s Training Status but will not update to the Concept2 Online Logbook.

So if i understand that correctly by using the PM5 as a sensor I lose the data going to the Logbook and thus lose meter logging and challenges etc. Can anyone confirm this?

Assuming my 3 options as I understand it are right then I’m leaning towards option 2 and keeping Garmin Connect and Connect2Logbook separate and using the row profile on my Fenix to get my ‘Training Status’ updated but lose some data.

So, anyone with a C2 RowErg. What setup do you use and do you get full data/Training Status and C2Logbook updating/syncing?

Thanks.

  • Yes I have had one for a three months now.

I have a Garmin HRM Dual HR chest monitor that I pair to the PM5.  I have USB key I plug in to the PM5 when I am rowing and it remembers this pairing as part of my profile that is stored on this.

When I activate the PM5 it connects to the ErgData app on my iOS phone.

I then select my normal session, which is a 10K row and all the data is syned from the ErgData app to my Logbook and from there it is synced to Garmin.

This sync to Garmin has only failed twice for reasons I have never determined, but then all I had to do was export the .tcx file from Logbook and manually import it into Garmin Connect.

I find this works very will and is easy to do and I get all the Pace, HR, Power and Stroke data I need in Garmin Connect.

  • You can have your phone connected to the PM5 with the ErgData app and your F6 connected to the PM5 as a smart trainer, at the same time with no problems. If you record the activity on both F6 and ErgData, and your C2 logbook is linked to Garmin Connect, then you will end up with 2 activities in Garmin Connect; one from the C2 logbook and one from the F6. You will only get training status if you record the activity on the F6 though. Equally, there’s no mechanism to push activities from F6 to the C2 logbook. To be fair, that is C2 protecting the integrity of the C2 logbook for records, events and races (verified results in the logbook).

  • Interesting.

Rower is due to arrive today. Typically just before I leave for work(!) so I still have not had the ability to do any testing.

So if I understand you right.

I can Connect the PM5 to both my F6 and to ErgData and have full data on my F6 (not that I will be looking) which will then be synced to GC afterwards and update Training Status and equally ErgData will sync the workout to the Concept2Logbook and update my training meters etc?

I need to email Concept2 for some clarity as they indicate that once you connect the PM5 to your watch then meters etc will no longer be logged to the logbook thus losing records and challenges etc.

With regard to linking GC and C2Logbook with each other I'm not bothered tbh so long as I have data in both one way of the other.

    Yes to all

once you connect the PM5 to your watch then meters etc will no longer be logged to the logbook thus losing records and challenges etc.

That is simply incorrect; recording on ErgData and F6 concurrently works absolutely fine and only the metres from ErgData go to the C2 logbook.

If you are going to record your rows on ErgData and F6, then there really is no point linking your C2 Logbook to Garmin Connect. My C2 logbook is still linked to Garmin Connect, but that’s a legacy from before the F6 could connect with the PM5 and I haven’t got around to undoing the API connection.

  • Excellent.

Have failed to get an answer to this on the C2 Forums.

Wonder why Concept2 specifically state that doing this will result in the loss on meters etc being logged.

One last question then thy you should be able to answer.

I will also be using my HRM Pro. It auto connects to the watch. How do you go about HR in your setup?

Linked to watch and PM5 (which then sends it to ErgData and ultimately onto the Logbook)

    Thanks

I have my HRM Pro paired to my F6 and to the PM5. You can choose to connect it to the PM5 by ANT+ or BLE; I’d say it’s better/more reliable to use ANT+ (it’ll be a number when the PM5 searches for a HR strap). The PM5 sends the HR data to ErgData along with rowing data, so no need to connect the HRM Pro to your phone (it might actually cause problems if your HRM Pro were connected to the phone plus watch and you tried to connect the PM5 to the HRM Pro via BLE, as the HRM Pro has only two BLE channels).

Thank you for the further help.

The rower is still in its box for now due to work. I'll sort it later and have a play.

Do you have a specific pairing/startup routine?

    I'm thinking:

Start a 'Row Indoor' on the F6 and let the HRM connect and the PM5 connect (both ANT+) > Connect the HRM to the PM5 > Start ErgData and let that connect to the PM5 > Row

Once complete stop and save on the F6 and stop and then sync ErgData.

  • So have now had a chance to use the Concept 2 RowErg.

And as Crispin_Ellisdon said the Fenix 6/PM5/ErgData all work fine contrary to what Concept2 state on their page.

My setup for anyone who may come across this at a later date.

    Fenix 6s Pro (16.70)

    HRM Pro (7.40)

    Concept2 RowErg (Model D) with PM5 (208)

    Concept2 ErgData App (1.4.4)

Firstly I paired the HRM Pro (Ant+) to the PM5.

Then I paired the PM5 to the Fenix 6 as a sensor.

Finally I start ErgData and connect to the PM5.

Start the activity on the Fenix and begin to row.

I didn’t look at the watch whilst rowing, I was focussing on ErgData. At the end of the row I stopped the activity on my Fenix and then on ErgData.
I’ve only quickly glanced over the data but Garmin Connect and the Concept2Logbook are as expected pretty much identical (1 extra stroke in GC).

Importantly‘Training Status’ was updated and on Concept2 side all my metres etc.

Why Concept2 state thy pairing the PM5 to compatible Garmin devices will result in the logbook not updating I do t know but as it stands everything works just fine.

  • HI,

can you tell me, how you paired the F6 and the PM5?

I have the F6 (not pro) and the PM5 (from 2017), both with the newest firmware.

I tried it in this way (I translate the way, because I com from Germany - maybe the translation is not exactly):

    - PM5 - Connections - more ANT+ options - ANT+-FE-C - you can now read ANT Device ID

    - F6 - sensors and accessories - new - search all sensors - Prompt: no sensors found (afters a few seconds)

    Greetings

  • - PM5 - Connections - more ANT+ options - ANT+-FE-C - you can now read ANT Device ID

I don’t recall having to mess around with the ANT FE-C settings on the PM5; that might actually stop things working as intended.  I simply left the PM5 on its normal settings (it seems to transmit as a smart trainer over ANT+ with no further action, which I’ve tested on multiple C2 rowers in the gym at my work) and on the F6 Pair New Sensor, but select “Smart Trainer” rather than “Search All Sensors”.
