Intensity minutes not logging correctly

Mondays training started warming up on the indoor cycle (10min)which nicely showed as a increase in the intensity log.
However, taking four tours on the indoor rower did not move the intensity count...
(All rowing sessions was below 5 minutes but that should not be a problem when using the activity " indoor rower" - only when using the automatic activity logging feature)

Today, warming up 10 min on indoor cycle again gave intensity minutes.
First rowing session was below 5 min - did not show on intensity minutes (pulse was as always high enough).
Second rowing session was 15 min and showed as a increase in intensity minutes.
Finally i made a 5.05min row and that partly showed in intensity...

Ussually I have no problem getting the intensity minutes when using the activity "indoor rower" but I think this problem came together with the latest update July 11?

Anybody else?

  • The Garmin support information for counting Intensity Minutes might help understand - https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=pNU9nnDzzGAHmEavp9rpY8

Basically you need at least 10 minutes with pulse rate  above what is determined to be the threshold for moderate intensity.

  • Basically you need at least 10 minutes

Please note that is 10 CONTINUOUS, UNINTERRUPTED minutes with NO drops below the required threshold pulse rate - drop below the threshold pulse rate, even for a second, and the timer starts again at 0 minutes.

  • Thanks for your input, but that does not change the fact that something - again - has gone from good to bad in relation to an update.

I have been using a Garmin watch for some years now when I switched from Suunto, starting with a Instinct an later the Fenix 6.

From the very beginning - and until some 10 days ago - I have had NO problems getting intensity minutes in relation to rowing activities below 10 min no matter what Garmin might write in their disclaimer.

Some of the major disciplines in indoor rowing are 500m, 1000m and 2000m. They are usually completed way below 10 min and for 500 and 1000 m below 5 min.

A bit comic that a renowned way of training cardio now is going "below the radar" when we speak intensity minutes but I guess focus from Garmin is on running and cycling.

There was already this discussion in another thread. There, as here, I assume that intensity minutes are confused with ACTIVITY minutes. Intensity minutes are really only reached after 10 minutes of CONTINUOUS activity above threshold.

  • I also think something is wrong with Training Effect and Intensity minutes computation in FX6
I did a gravel ride recently quite exhausting (137km 4000m D+ in 10h moving time) both with my FX 6 Solar PRO and my EDGE. All data (HR; Speed; Power; cadence) are identical except Training effect.

TE Aerobie Anaerobie Exercice Load TSS IF
    FX6 2.2 0 43 542 0.75
    Edge 530 3.7 0 159 545 0.75

second day Gravel (87km 2000m D+ in 5h moving time)  All data (HR; Speed; Power; cadence) are identical except Training effect.

TE Aerobie Anaerobie Exercice Load TSS IF
    FX6 1 0 15 285 0.73
    Edge 530 3.9 0 186 284 0.73

There was a lot of stops and walking due to the steepness of the ride, but clearly something is wrong with FX6 Training Effect computation (as I was exhausted ) as TSS and IF are also identical

  • I'm running 17.74 beta firmware. I haven't really spotted any problems except two days ago the training load for my daily stroll with the dog accrued a training load of 92 for a slow 2km walk. Usually such a walk would score a training load of 2, not 92.

     .

    I guess I should file a report.
