Hi,
I am extremely unhappy with the results that the altimeter produces on the Garmin 6 Pro models. The barometric sensor is supposed to provide more accurate readings than a purely GPS based model. In practice, that is absolutely not my experience.
Here is an example of one hike that started at 1785m as specified at the top of the lift. The first image shows altitude as it was recorded by Komoot on my iPhone. As you can see, the GPS based terrain model is about 30m off.
Komoot
This image shows the values as recorded by the Garmin watch. The first 45 minutes show completely different altitudes than Komoot (and from the terrain, Komoot is correct here).
That hike had about 550m altitude gain and 550m altitude loss (because we ended up where we started). The Garmin watch reports an altitude gain of 790m and an altitude loss of 540m. Due to that ridiculous error, the Garmin values are basically useless...
There seems to be some kind of smoothing going on in the Garmin watch that does not deal well with altitude changes. In my case that was triggered by a chair lift ride with 400m altitude gain over 20 minutes. I would imagine that the same can happen by driving up with a car.
It would be really nice if that behaviour could be improved.
