Syncing heart rate between watch and Trainrroad/Tacx etc

I really like the recent update that means I can now get training load updated on my watch based on the workout done in Traininerroad (or Zwift, Tacx app etc) - saves me having to record it on 2 devices!  However one thing I've noticed is that the heart rate tracking doesn't map across into the Garmin recorded daily heart rate graphs/stats.

To explain, when using Trainerroad I track heart rate using a chest strap (and on the basis of a workoput I did yesterday it recorded average heart rate of 136 bpm anmd max of 164 bpm).  However, when I look on the Garmin connect app over the same time period my heart rate as recorded by the watch was an average of 75 bpm and maximum 123 bpm.  I recognise that the difference is probably down to the difference accuracy of chest vs wrist mounted heart rate monitoring and would be interested to know if :

1. You can set the watch up so it starts capturing heart rate from the chest strap even if you are not recording an activity on the watch

2. You can update the heart rate graph in connect with the data from the ride so that the daily/weekly training on resting/high heart rate takes into account these externally recorded activities.

Hope that makes sense and thanks in advance....

  • The watch is probably configured as the main device, so garmin will use all data it get´s from the device. I would used don´t wear the watch while working out mit the trainer. This way there is no data from the watch and the graphs etc should be correct.

  • Grab a HRM-Dual or HRM-Pro then you can use the strap with both Trainreroad/Zwift/Rouvy etc over Bluetooth and ANT+ to your Garmin concurrently

  • Do what @philipshambrook is suggesting. I have my polar H10 strap connected via Ant+ \ on the watch and BT with trainer day. So get a strap that has both protocol.

  • I am having the same issue here - I have been using my new 945 to manually record an indoor cycling activity while also simultaneously recording via TrainerRoad. When manually recording, I have a Wahoo TICKR (chest HRM) connected to both the 945 and TR while riding, and when I complete the activity on the 945, the activity's HR data from the chest HRM appears on the HR chart.

However, if I don't use the 945 to manually record, and instead only rely on TR's sync into Garmin Connect, the HR data is not reflected in Connect's HR chart. It syncs the HR data for the activity (when viewing the HR data in the specific activity page), but not on the daily HR chart. This TR activity data is collected from the chest HRM, but as alluded to by the author, the 945 doesn't connect to the chest HRM when it is not recording an activity.

Has anyone determined a way to correct this issue (connecting HRM to 945 without activity recording, not wearing watch during activity to have TR HRM data supersede the watch HR data)?

  • Maybe you can use Jacket mode to turn off wrist heart rate during the workout?

  • Sorry, a bit new here - is "jacket mode" the setting on the watch where I turn off its optical wrist HR reading? I'm assuming the suggestion here is that if there's no conflicting data being uploaded to Connect directly from the 945, then hopefully Connect will populate the daily HR chart using the HR data from the synced ride from TR?

  • Yes, that is my line of reasoning. I believe I have seen that suggestion in another thread. I have not tried it myself though.
