Unable to broadcast HR to Concept2 PMR5

Hi All

I'm ultimately trying to rebroadcast my HR from my Polar BLE strap to the PMR5 via my Fenix 6X Pro using BLE.

What I'm finding is that the Fenix won't connect to the PMR5 using Bluetooth though.

  1. The Fenix will broadcast from the wrist HR sensor to the PMR5 using ANT+
  2. The Polar strap will connect to the PMR5 directly using BLE
  3. The Fenix wont broadcast the Polar's BLE HR by ANT+, instead it just reads zero
  4. The PMR5 wont make a BLE connection to the Fenix as a HRM, it gets stuck saying "connecting"
  5. The Fenix will broadcast the Polar's BLE HR to my Windows laptop using BLE

So it looks like all the equipment is working fine independently but wont play nicely together. Both the PMR5 and the Fenix are running the latest stable releases

  • Interestig to see: i've just had similar problems with a vivoactive 4s (in fact i tried to connect to a PM5 and for testing to my Fenix 6,both with the same result).

  • The Fenix wont broadcast the Polar's BLE HR by ANT+,

That doesn't surprise me because you're asking the watch to receive HR on one medium then convert and broadcast on another.

The Fenix will broadcast the Polar's BLE HR to my Windows laptop using BLE

Are you sure the Polar is not connected directly to the laptop? I thought the HR broadcast was only over ANT+ Broadcast heart rate during an activity

  • Can confirm that neither the watch or the strap were connected to any other devices.

Broadcast definitely works over Bluetooth because I was able to successfully broadcast the Polar's HR to my laptop using the watch and Bluetooth.

What's the best way to officially report this as a problem. Do Garmin support monitor these forums?

    Thanks

  • I've just tried a little bit around... At the moment when i connect a BT-HR Strap (Polar) H7 to to the Fenix, the icon to start broadcasting is greyed out.

  • With my Polar strap connected I can broadcast to the laptop using Bluetooth, the watch doesn't show the HR reading though (see the pic)

Ultimately I can't connect the Fenix to the PMR5 as a HR monitor using Bluetooth full stop. It doesn't connect when broadcasting the wrist monitor's HR either so that takes the Polar strap out of the equation

  • Official response from Garmin is that broadcast is only for use with other Garmin devices which ignores the fact that it does work with some other non-Garmin devices

  • As shown in my first post broadcasting between Fenix6 and Vivoactive4 does also not work very well... ;) (Will Garmin say it's behause of the Polar HR Strap?)

  • I missed the that you said you'd tried to connect your Fenix to your Vivoactive which is Garmin to Garmin lol.

Below is the support transcript, sounds like nonsense to me, my next test will be to see if it will broadcast to my laptop, which isn't made by Garmin BTW, while connected to the PMR5 as a trainer. I might contact Concept2 to see if they can fix it from their end

[12:50:12] Lauren: Hi there, the broadcasting feature is only for Garmin to Garmin devices, 3rd party accessories or unit will not work
[12:51:20] Steve Hopkins: That doesn't make sense, I should be able to broadcast the Fenix's wrist HR monitor to the PMR5 using Bluetooth which I can't
[12:52:32] Steve Hopkins: And from the pictures on my forum post you can clearly see me broadcasting the Polar strap's HR using the Fenix watch to my laptop using Bluetooth
[12:53:25] Lauren: No, you won't be able to, it's only really for if you are going to send the heart rate from the wrist based sensor to an Edge unit  - https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/fenix6-6ssport/EN-US/GUID-D8D363C2-0690-48D4-95E2-A3557E7D53C2.html
[12:54:11] Lauren: Or a HRM sensor that is connect to the fenix, but again only to another Garmin device
[12:55:18] Steve Hopkins: Why am I able to broadcast to my laptop from the Fenix watch using BLE and to the PMR5 using ANT+ but not BLE? I thought the broadcast feature was to enable broadcasting to things like Peloton bikes and rowing machines
[12:59:59] Lauren: No just Garmin devices, ANT+ works differently and is more compatible with other 3rd party units.  depending on your set up, usually customers would need to pair the the HRM to the application like Zwift and record from there, or have it on the Garmin Device with the trainer connected if they can and record from there, you can't send it in a loop. It will only ever be the trainer or sensor connecting to the Fenix and sending data, rather than the Fenix  sending data to the 3rd party sensor/trainer

  • I'm ashamed to say that I've just bought a new strap, one that transmits BLE and ANT+ simultaneously, as I can't see Garmin fixing this Cry

  • Are you absolutely certain it's not the strap connected directly to the laptop?

The manuals (and Garmin Support by your account) tell us that broadcasting HR is only ANT+.
