Finally had enough - 800m distance difference over 8k (Fenix 6 pro vs 6s)…

The distance calculation on my 6pro has gotten worse and worse since January with constant offsets and lately huge differences to measured distances vs my wife’s 6s. Today’s run ended with an 800m difference after 8km running with my 6pro losing distance constantly. Worse still, looking at the track it does not seem anywhere near bad enough to be down by this distance.

This really needs to be sorted now, thankfully I’m not planning on doing any races soon.

  • Was hoping that this would be sorted by the recent firmware update but I have experienced this sort of variance with both the previous official and the latest 17.72 beta.

  • 800 meters difference on 8 km is a lot! Never seen that bad distance measurements myself. Which type of Fenix 6 Pro do you got? Titanium by any chance? Do you wear it on inside or outside wrist? 1 second recording? Do you soak you GPS or not?

  • Yeah, it’s a lot and not for the first time! Standard Fenix 6 Pro, not titanium. I wear it on the outside of my right wrist as I always have previously, had to turn off 1 sec recording as the GOS track was just all over the shop, zigzagging back and forth across the roads. I have not soaked my watch before, never been able to see why this would help when I run 40km per week, surely it must get enough time to lock on and sort itself out during the activity.

Does the soaking really do anything? My wife’s 6s has never needed this and always seems more or less accurate as mine was until this year. Will give it a go if there is a genuine benefit.

  • Ok, do one test with 1 sec recording, wear the watch on inside wrist, and do a 5 min soak after GPS turned green. Stand still in an open area while waiting for the soak to be done. And see if it makes any difference. 10% distance loss is too much.

  • In the latest tests I most often gets 1.5 - 2 % distance loss when wearing the watch on inside wrist and about 2.5 - 4% distance loss when wearing it on the outer wrist. Always on left arm.

  • Thanks, will give it a try.

  • Constantly loosing ~1km on a 10km road. It is such a rubbish. On my fast sector at one point it showed 7:30 per km (was running with 4:40) on easy sector was running with 6 per km the watch showed 4:10. This is one terrible running watch.

  • Seriously if you’re seeing a 10% error, there is probably something wrong with your unit, either in software or a sketchy antenna contact. Check the CPE file is current, try factory resetting it, try to do a warranty return, in that order.

Anders has been looking very closely at pace and distance errors which are much smaller than that.

  • 1 sec. vs. Smart doesn't make any difference regarding pace and distance calculations. Pace and distance are always calculated each second. With Smart recording you only get smaller file with "lower resolution" (fewer recordings), so you can't see details for every second.

As for GPS soaking, for full GPS almanac information you will need 12,5 minutes and for ephemeris data you need 30 seconds. If you have current CPE, there is no need for soak.

  • It's clearly your watch. I just cycled a route today, repeating the same one I did on June 2. The first time the distance registered 30.38 km, today it was 30.35 km. The difference, 20 meters, could reflect a slightly different starting point that varies by several meters as I leave the driveway. The end points were identical. Elevation gain was slightly off, 469 metres vs 461.
