Question for those using routes and navigation...

What sort of battery burn rate are you getting?

I'm at around 7-8% per hour which seems high - 17.72 beta f/w F6Pro, using GPS and wristHR off (using a belt)...

(Map is on North Up, not track up)

Already removed all third party CIQ data fields, and have a custom power profile for ultra's but wonder how to improve that. Although I have a number of maps on my watch, for each activity only one is active

  • Following. I have also noticed that my burn rate during activities seems unusually high lately (outside of activities, battery is fine). I haven't really looked into it or verified that it's even an issue yet, but it seems like I burned 50% of my battery on my last 6 hour hike, which seemed like a lot to me...

  • Yeah, that seems similar to what I'm getting. For my Ultra I'm going to disable BT and use alternative live tracking

  • My most recent data point was from a 100k I ran last month. I saw a burn rate right around 3% per hour using navigation, minimal map viewing, oHR enabled, stryd footpod connected, Bluetooth connected, and with gps and glonss active. This is using a 6xpro solar. Without really doing a deep dive on previous navigation activites, It doesn't seem much different than what I've seen over the past 18 or so months.

  • Map viewing definitely seems the big one, though I've found disabled BT really helps

  • I ran a 50 mile race last month, on 16.60RC on a 6x, following a course but not viewing the map much, and that was 2.3% an hour (I have some Python code that extracts the undocumented battery records from the FIT file). External HR strap, Tempe, BT on, GPS/Galileo.

I'd done a factory reset not long before that to get rid of excessive usage that seemed to be BT-related, as disabling BT on the watch got rid of it.

I'll be following a course later on 17.72 & will report back on that.

  • Apart from me having a 6 not an x, this is similar to what I'll be looking at - got a 40miler coming up, with Tempe, HRM Run.... Might have to consider a reset in the future

  • Interesting today

Mo maps/routing but everything else. Got around 4%/hour.

Wondering if my choice of map isn't helping, it's a very feature rich map with lots of Rights of Way etc

  • Could be. 12% in 3h45 today, talkytoaster map, probably displayed about 20% of the time when I was running windy paths with a lot of junctions, other screens for the more straightforward bits. 3.2%/hour is a lot more than I was seeing a couple of weeks ago, but I hardly had the map screen on at all (it was the North Downs Way 50 and between the standard marks, the Centurion markers, and having recced half of it, I only went wrong once :) ). I've also noticed that the usage rate is quite variable with the charge level, it falls very fast between 60 and 50%, which might have been part of today as it ended on 65%.

There was a point where I was very happy to have the tt map - running on paths through meadowland that you're not supposed to go off at the moment because of ground-nesting birds, and the watch told me I was off course. It was clear that I'd planned the route along a path which hadn't been mown so couldn't be used, and also really clear what the shortest route back to where I wanted to be was.

When I reset it, I did it twice, second time using the power off & hold down three keys releasing one at a time procedure, and that did the trick.

Best of luck with your race - what time are you targeting?

  • It's the Black Mountains Ultra. TBH my target is to finish as this is the first race ultra I've done since the infamous Brecon 2 Cardiff 2020 (Storm Ciara!!) so this will be very much me finding myself back on the horse!

The map is great for ROW's, but it's getting very obvious there's some serious access issues to ROW's in my area. I've contacted the local council to clear up what's going on with them!

I did do the long-press light reset today. This week I have a 30K planned for Monday and then tapering off, so I'm going to watch battery like a hawk. I do have a powerbank I take on races so I can charge my watch and phone simultaneously (QI Charging! Rocks)

  • The cutoff is 12 hours. The fastest I've done 50K is under 5 hours(Two Tunnels in Bath - FLAT) but with trail-y ones I've managed about 6-7. For the extra 8K (it's apparently 58K) I'll add and hour on. But TBH I'l be happy whatever I do, just looking forward to racing again!

I've done some self-inflicted 50K's since CV, and down about 7-8 hours.

Weather will factor in - hopefully won't be too hot!!
