Fenix 6 Series - 17.72 Public Beta

Hello Fenix 6 customers,

Edit (6/17 12:30 PM): Non-Pro models: We have identified a crash that occurs when scrolling past a CIQ widget, if the Widget Glances setting is enabled. For now, you can avoid this crash by simply disabling the Widget Glance setting (via Menu - Widgets). Our teams are working to resolve this issue as soon as we can. I apologize for the inconvenience.

At this time, we believe that Pro models are not affected by this crash.

Our next beta version for the Fenix 6 series is now available!

Please ensure that you are downloading the correct beta software for your specific device.

Instructions for installation are available below the change log on each of the above pages.

  • Since this update my watch isn’t connecting to my bike sensors. Anyone else had this issue?

Also - I have my on board heart rate set to broadcast but it isn’t being picked up by my bike computer.

  • No problems here. i have Tempe, HRM Tri, Bike Speed & Cadence Sensors

  • Stress measurement in the connect app is gone? Got a Fenix 6

  • Do you mean the widget display in Connect? I still have it

  • Yes. It's gone. With a manual measuring m y Fenix say that the HR measurement are bad ....but HR is still ok

  • If you compare work expressed in kJ and calories expressed in kcal of a ride during which there is (almost) zero stopped time and these numbers are (almost) identical, it means that F6 still uses exerted power as the basis of calories burnt.

This means that Garmin still uses an energy expenditure model which assums  a globally true (=valid for all the cyclists) metabolic efficiency of 23.9% (which is exactly 1/4.184 where 4.184 is the conversion factor between kJ and kcal).

If you see that the numbers are different it suggests that Garmin now adapted Firstbeat’s enery expenditure model.

But to simplify it there is a very simple test requiring only appr. 1-2 minutes:

    1. start an activity at the end of a hill or mountain

    (2. it helps if your heart rate is relatively high dure to preceding effort, but it is not a requirement)

3 coast down for 1-2 minutes without pedaling, so your power is always zero

    4. therefore work expressed in kJ will be zero by definition

    5. if after 1-2 minutes calories are also zero then it is the old model, if there will be >0 then it implies it must be Firstbeat model

note: higher HR decreases the necessary time for the test, because even after appr. 10-15 seconds you should see calories jumping from 0 to 1.

    Thanks, mate.

  • If you scroll down to "Edit My Day" can you re-add it?

  • To Skyewalkr:

Thanks for the supportive example. It is exactly what I think.

You mentioned ‘They've been making efforts on other devices to address this issue,’

Which devices do you know about? Eg what about Edge series? When I contacted Firstbeat last time (this January) hoping that their having bought by Garmin will help regarding their ‘convincing power’ the guy from Firstbeat confirmed that they had talked again to Garmin’s relevant reps, but got no clear promises.

    To AravilarE:

Firstbeat model is not simply a function of HR, but as I wrote it includes the heart rate variability and other ‘switch on-off’ factor.

I dont remember I ever wrote that kcal equals to kjoule. What I say that work expressed in kjoule and calories expressed in kcal are the same by Garmin. Which is true only if everybody has the same metabolic efficiency, namely 23.9%. I did not see your post in original version, so no offence taken due to any combativity. Peace!

    • Added the ability to rate the perceived effort and feel of a Run, Bike, or Swim activity. The prompts appear during activity save. Go to [Activity] Settings > Self Evaluation for options.

I'd want to see this on trail runs too.

  • On mine anyway, the option to enable it is there in the Trail Run activity
