Please Garim: Can we have this on the Fenix as well? ( Added directional arrows to routes, courses, and history lines.)

From the Edge 8.0 FW changelog:

" Added directional arrows to routes, courses, and history lines."

Could we get this finally on the Fenix please? I am so tired double checking the route on my phone everytime the route intersects with itself.

  • To get round these issues (and yes, I appreciate this is only a workaround and don't suggest it as a complete fix)

Import your route into PlotARoute, which is really good at adding custom TBT with text you can put on the map.

In area's of loopback etc, I put some custom directions with added text to act as an aide memoire. Not ideal, but helps.

Then from PAR export as a .FIT file, copy to /Garmin/Newfiles and use that route

  • Navigation with TBT is functional on the fenix.

Perhaps it is functional on roads but not on trails. My watch manages to have excessive number of TBT directions in places where a trail is wavy or zigzaggy but at the same time it often skips TBT directions in places where there are actual turns. For example, it won't have a turn direction/notification at an Y junction where the angle between the two trails isn't sharp.

  • Ya, when you let the watch (or Connect) generate the course with TBT directions, it doesn't always work great. Indeed, sometimes I've gotten excessive numbers of directions, especially on switchback trails where it's telling me to turn every 20 meters.

But like AJR suggested above, now I've been using Plotaroute for generating courses, and it works really well. You can precisely place and label your turn directions that you want, and delete any that you don't want.

For example, you could make a TBT direction that specifically says "Slight left after the big tree".

  • I'd recommend Plotaroute to make or import courses aswell.... Although I use basecamp for waypoint navigation... Turn by turn navigation is not so good using connect.

With Plotaroute I like that I can see the actual turn by turn directions directly on the map (comes as text directly on the map) as well as the usual turn by turn notification screen, a feature not in connect... also you can choose when you get the turn prompts by choosing how many meters or feet before a turn,so you can adjust for speed etc or even name the turn as said in the above post...another feature not in connect.... Also the map used to plot the courses is far more detailed for off road hiking routes etc than the one used in connect...Plotaroute adds features to Navigation connect cannot.

  • Yes, I've used PlotARoute a few times, and it works great. But I don't like a hassle of having to connect my watch to a computer and copying the FIT file manually. It makes it impossible to do a good route with directions when I travelling without laptop.

This is something Garmin could and should do the right way.

  • My routine is as follows:
    - create and edit a route with TBTs on a computer
    - I open Plot-a-route on my phone and download the fit file
    - transfer the route to the watch using the Gimporter widget

It has some work to do, but it works well for me.
  • Gimporter widget

Same here. Though if silentvoyager has an Apple phone, it's not much help unfortunately.

  • Is it still the same? I mean navigating with Use  Map option gives the directional arrows, while doing that with Follow Course doesnt?

  • Btw what is it in the manual?

    Type

Sets the behavior of the pointer that appears during direct routing.”

My Fenix 6X does not show it. Is it something that has been eliminated from F6 in the meantime?

    thx
