No sleep recorded after pausing an activity with "resume later"

Is it just me, or does having an activity that was set to "resume later" prevent the fenix 6 (16.60) from recording any sleep or recovery?

  • Doesn’t seem strange to me after all, you’ve not stopped the activity.

  • That would be a bad assumption on Garmin's part that your "body battery" can't recover while an activity is suspended... Just trying to confirm that this is indeed how it works, and that it's not just a problem with my setup.

I wouldn’t think they are making that assumption. Consider, how can your body battery, recovery time etc. be estimated when an activity has not been stopped and saved?

  • The fenix 6 continues to record heart rate and steps etc when an activity has been suspended (as it would if no activity had ever been started), so I'm surprised that it stops updating the body battery in this situation.

Can someone confirm that this is in fact what's supposed to happen, and not some misconfiguration on my device, or perhaps the behavior depends on the activity type ("hiking")?

  • I'm interested in this as well. Typical scenario is a multi-day hike where you want to track your trip as one activity, but still track sleeping and recovery at night.

    Contact Garmin.

  • Hmmm, I never noticed it before, but going back and reviewing the last time I did a backpacking trip (and used the "resume later" function overnight), indeed it is showing that there was no sleep data for those nights.

  • Yes I checked and I had the same experience on an overnight hike a while ago as well.

However, it doesn't record stress, which is a key part of the sleep algorithm.

  • I did! Here's Garmin's explanation:

What it comes down to is the sleep score/stress/body battery are all based on the HRV data the watch gathers. The watch does not get good data during a lot of movement (an activity), so the software is built so that it does not record it at all when in an activity. The Resume Later circumstance is special because you are not currently doing an activity, but the watch sees it that you are.

There's now an open request to address this issue, so if it's something you'd like to see fixed, be sure to let them know!
