choice between 6 and 6X

For my next watch, I'm hesitating between the 6 and the 6X.
I am 53 years old and I am quite strong prebyte (badly to read telephone without glasses for example). As I don't always run with my sunglasses adapted to my eyesight (at night, I don't want to ...), on my current watch I am using 3 or 4 data per screen.

Is there a big difference in readability between the 2?
Is the 6 sufficiently readable, in particular the cards for a person with correct vision (and with my glasses for me obviously) or is the 6X really better on this side (but also heavier and more imposing)?

Finally, do the 6 pro solar and 6X pro solar models have strictly the same functions and do they evolve in the same way?

  • Personally I use 6X, had before normal 6. In my opinion difference in size and weight You won't fell on everyday use to compare with normall 6. But screen is more readable in 6X during training, You can use more data fields and ofc You get bigger battery. In my opinion go for 6X

  • Coming from a 5X and 5X Plus with a detour on Instinct (Excellent !!) I was also heading for the 6X.

But once in the shop that 29th of August, I have handled the 6 Grey Titanium and it was so light !
And on the wrist it did not felt like wearing a dish like on my previous 5X Plus !
Also my old 5X had a 240x240 and the smaller Fenix 6 is 260x260.   (The Fenix 6X is 280x280).
I have never felt the display was too small on Fenix 6 and I use the map a lot.
Having 6 instead of 8 fields in activity is not affecting me. They are plenty of custom data fields which are using a lot anyway. Like "Walker" for example

    which is excellent.

I have not regret my choice buying the Fenix 6 Grey Titanium. It is so confortable.
Also the 22mm wide bands are very easy to find and less sweaty than my previous 26mm wide bands.
With its titanium bracelet it looks enough classy to go with a suit and as it is my 24/7 watch, it's important to be able to wear it in all occasions.
Now I got a sweat spot for the Tactix and the Descent MK2.
But for everyday life and all terrain watch, the Fenix 6 size suits me perfectly.
And yes both 6 pro and 6X pro have the same functions in the same way.
The 6 standard has no maps and small memory.
Now the 6X knows as the "Enduro" is also a 6 standard in the 6X case: no maps !

Maps are great and really useful for me.

Now about display. The Gorilla Glass version got much less reflection than the Sapphire Glass version.
A 6X with Gorilla Glass screen is just amazing.
Now I love sapphire. I have banged my watch on many door knobs, frame and steel gear and I got not a single tiny mark on my sapphire. Again no regret and the display is also stunning in all condition just shiny in some condition when the Gorilla Glass is matte.

My Fenix is now almost 2 years old. Zero issue but very little one (like Battery draining with BT or the compass which seems to get lost)...  Keeping a watch that long on my arm that long, is a personal record. ;-)

    My two cents.

  • You mention firstly 6 and 6X and later 6 Pro Solar and 6X Pro Solar. Be careful to understand the difference between Pro models and non Pro. I believe that all variants of the 6X have Pro features included (maps and music) whereas the 6 offers the option of Pro or non Pro, so be sure to compare equal variants. There might also be some difference in the native watch faces available, but I'm not sure if this is dependant upon size of watch or Pro vs non Pro. Maybe it is only the smaller 6S that is more limited in this regard.

Otherwise, as a 58 year old who needs reading glasses, I favour the 6X Pro Solar, which I've owned for almost 18 months. Obviously there is the larger screen, which offers the option of additional fields displayed or a larger font, but also longer battery life day to day, week to week and year after year because the larger battery is charge cycled less often. Interestingly, while I do require reading glasses for the phone, computer and the watch if I want to see more than just the time, I can actually read the data fields outdoors in daylight without glasses, even with eight fields displayed.

  • Yes I forgot to specify I always speak of PRO models with carthography

  • In the SOLAR version, the screen is not fragile (scratches)?

  • I went with Solar because I also own a 3HR and 5X+ and I did not want to experience the poor visibility of the sapphire glass ever again. In 18 months with the Solar glass I picked up one light scratch, early on, when I think my DLC coated Oura Ring made contact when I wore them on opposite sides.

Since then I have taken care to switch both to the same side to avoid the problem and have not seen any more scratches since.

The scratch I did have was quite subtle and a complete non issue in daily life.

  • How this post is EXACTLY my same concern. I want the mapping function and I am also have bad vision. Right now I have FR 245M and it fits nicely on my wrist which is kind of small. So going from 42MM to 51MM I thought might be too big a jump. But I want the 'latest' Garmin Fenix watch and technology, and I am pretty confused. I have on Order but can cancel the https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/702902/pn/010-02410-18 6S Pro. I like the idea of Solar, I would like to move up to Trail Ultras. I definately want the mapping.  Is the only different between the 51M and 47M the size? Or should I go for the 42MM which is still seem a little better than the 245M display  wise.

Also due to the fact of the sale I wonder if 7 Series is coming?  With my Company discount above watch is only $720, vs. $799 Sale Price vs. $899 List Price.
