Differences in GPX track length possible when importing into Connect ?

I want less of a textual discussion here.

I would be happy about as many users as possible who import the linked GPX file into their Connect profile, and upload a screenshot of it.

I'm interested to see if there are any differences in distances here. Therefore, the distance to this track should also be seen in the screenshots.

If you are at STRAVA, it would also help me if you send this GPX also OUT of CONNECT to STRAVA to see if there is a major change in track length after export FROM CONNECT.

However, the screenshot of Connect should not be missing. This is the most important thing for me.

Thanks !

  • Garmin Connect

    Runalyze

    I don't have Strava though.

Do you want me to take an existing activity in Garmin Connect, export it as GPX and import the GPX file as a new activity in Garmin Connect?

I can tell it will always differ, the distance shown in Garmin Connect for the original activity is based on the total distance calculation made by the watch during the activity. It will be based on GPS and accelerometer data, accelerometer data (watch, running dynamics pod or HR strap) or a FP. When exported to GPX and re-imported it will be based on a distance calculation done by Garmin Connect based on the GPS data only.

The first three screen shots are from the original activity in GC, automatically pushed to Strava and Runalyze. They all show the same distance, the distance calculated by the watch. That data is available in the FIT file as a session data record. Finally I've imported the activity to GC which gives a different distance (based on GC distance caluclutation). Unfortunately I can't import that one into Strava without manipulating the time stamps in the GPX, otherwise Strava will consider it a duplicate.

I'm sorry but without a context you will get just that...

Which is closest to the truth, 10.22 or 10.42? I guess that 99% would argue it is 10.42 since that would make you a quicker runner and we all know Fenix6 distance is always to short...
10.22 is from a calibrated Stryd and is probably as close as possible to the truth. Before I started to use a Stryd my Fenix 6 always got about 10.32. Imagine a F6 that overestimates the distance?!? :-)

  • For me the GPS distance is always more close to the truth but the distance is always slightly to short anyways. When comparing the measurements with odometer. Maybe we should create a separate thread about that.
