Not in the UK, but I see contours without having to buy additional maps.
Just checking, but do you have contours turned on in the settings? Long press the middle button to access settings> scroll down to Map> Contours = On.
Yes I have them turned on, however they are not included on the map in the UK as standard you have to purchase a different map. Frustrated as this was one of my reasoning to get the watch and to find have to buy something else is annoying and disappointing.
These are the contours lines I use for my country, but there’s Great Britain as well. Lines every 10m. Get the SRTM version:
To be completely fair, there aren't that many contour lines in the actual UK
Lol, not round here in Cambridgeshire certainly, I have a talkytoaster map but don’t see the contours much! Plenty of places steep enough that they’re useful though.
Well, the simple overlay I liked above (which is free and adapts to any map you choose to display so… isn’t that the solution? ) has lines every 10m: lot of lines even for the UK!
When hiking on the Dolomites I switch to more sparse overlays or maps with fewer integrated lines.
No need to buy anything, you can download a ~90mb only contour only transparent overlay map
Go to garmin.opentopomap.org/

Copy to Garmin folder on watch and enable... :)
Though saying that - here's my fave maps

Cost a tenner at the moment and includes not only contours but Rights of Way too
Quick edit
I have the UK Topo Light v9 (~20 quid) and these maps..
The UK Topo Light seems more accurate map wise in my area, but the Thorn's map has more paths. Both have contours.
(I live and run in the shadow of the Beacons so yeah, contours are a must!)
Most of the free OSM based maps for Garmins have contours in the UK.
Not sure why they didn't add the contour lines to Europe. It's really naughty from Garmin. The good thing as you can see in the messages received in this post is that you can installed free or paid maps in the watch. Also, Garmin provides updates in the pre-installed maps. As you, I was going to complain to Garmin for the same reason however when I saw I can install maps, I forgot about it.
Wasn't aware of the thorns maps! Great discovery. Would be perfect if it also had routing
