Why new firmware always worse battery performance?

Yesterday I update my Fenix 6 pro to v16.60 and coming from 0.3 / hours now I have some hours with -1.5 %. Never happened before...

Charged to 100% after 1h already fall tp 99% without use it (-1%)

I never saw a FW that increased my Fenix performance...incredible...

  • It's good to power cycle a watch after a software update, or sometimes soft reset...

I hope this helps in your case...

    All the best...

  • Probably because you're more obsessively checking it, thus causing it to use more battery, making you panic and check it more.

    Rinse, repeat.

  • this. i have no idea what the hell people are doing with these updates, but not a single one goes by that isn't accompanied by "it's killing my battery!!". meanwhile, i have not had a single issue, ever. full 10 days of battery with literally everything turned on (24/7 hr, 24/7 pulse ox, sleep, etc) and 10-15 hours of active workout tracking. 10 days, like clockwork, every firmware.

New firmware always worse (worsey) for battery performance, but it's never happened before?  A Yogi-ism?

  • People need to stop interpreting that ConnectIQ battery widget as gospel. Taking a 2 hour sampling of battery drain, by using a widget that's known for errors, is pseudoscience at best. The widget can be useful sometimes as a general estimate of what your battery is kind of doing over long periods of time, but many people here are using it like it's a scientific tool that you can use for a couple hours to get a full understanding of what your battery is doing and why. It doesn't work like that.

You can't just install a new firmware update, use it for 2 days (this firmware has only been out for TWO DAYS), and decide that the new firmware is definitely draining your battery and you need to start posting angry threads on the internet about it.

  • Have you calculated already, how many Updates we can still do until there is no battery left? Maybe with a good calculation, we can choose to skip some updates every now and again. Is Fenix performance related to battery drain or snappiness while use or watch?

I have done plenty software updates, just done 16.60, maybe this is my first with battery issues. I'll let you know.

  • I've been a Fenix user for over four years, with the 6X Pro Solar now at 17 months. I've tried many beta firmwares and all the live releases and never experienced any unusual battery drain.

I did try a couple of battery widgets on my 5X, really for curiosity, and had a sneaking suspicion that they accelerated drain, even if only just a little. I've never used one on my 6X. There has been absolutely no need. I charge the watch to 80% once per week and there is plenty (20-30%) remaining a week later. That's with daily activity recordings with and without GPS.

I installed 16.60 last night and the battery % displayed on the Garmin native watch face has not dropped at all overnight. Typically it will drop 7% each day with my activities recorded.

  • In 12 hours I lost 11% of battery, sleeping for 8.
