Upload Pilates to Strava

I asked this in the Apps section but so far no responses, so…

I have a f6x Pro, rides, runs, walks etc all sync to GCM and upload to Strava without issue.

I have just started doing some PT sessions and thought I might try and record them as “Pilates” activity (couldn’t find anything else suitable, open to suggestions?). After finishing the activity it uploaded to GCM fine but NOT to Strava. Are there only certain activity types that upload? Is there any way to get a Pilates activity to upload automatically?

Maybe Strength, unless of course you are a regular gym/weights user? My logic being most PT-style sessions (massively generalising here!) are to build up your strength (muscular/cardio/otherwise) towards whatever your main sports/goals are. Strength includes recording of reps too, which may or may not be useful.

Otherwise, it's just a label.. and suspect in any event very little actionable info beyond recording time spent working out and perhaps HR?

  • Thanks - I originally looked at Strength but it seemed overly complicated for what I was looking for. Really just want to record the 60 minute session, HR etc. Also with the way the sessions are run, I just go straight from one activity to the next, no time to be messing with the watch etc.

I originally had no intention of recording it as an activity however since I had the watch on, I figured I might as well.

My main question though, is, can Pilates be auto uploaded to Strava?

  • My main question though, is, can Pilates be auto uploaded to Strava?

Having just tested it (along with yoga and strength) = yes it is auto uploaded into Strava, though appears as a generic workout (vs. categorised strength and yoga for these respectively).

All of these are basically the same, 100% the same in terms of the way Strava will see it. Within Garmin, the main difference is the terms used when you hit the lap button / review stats:

    Yoga: counts "Poses"

    Pilates: counts "Moves"

    Strength: counts "Sets"

(all really just laps to separate one from another, and with no need to use at all)

Strength gives a few more options, and works similar to pool swim:

    1. Auto-counts repetitive movements as 'reps'
    2. Pressing lap goes from a set 1, to rest, to set 2, to rest, to set 3 etc.
    3. During the rest you have the option to correct the number of reps for the previous set (if it counted wrong) and add a weight value if relevant.

All depends on a) whether you will ever want to review your HR stats over the 60 minutes breaking it down into each of your activity (some might be tougher than others), b) whether you might found the rep counting feature handy! Otherwise, just let <whatever> activity run and stop it at the end.

Thanks for testing that, although it begs the question as to why mine does not auto upload when walk, ride, run etc do. I did change the default activity name on the Fenix from Pilates to Physio or Gym but it still shows on GCM as Pilates. I quickly tried a strength activity and didn’t change the name for that and it did not upload.

Ive never seen settings to turn on/off uploads for certain activities, are there?

PS, thanks for taking the time to explain how the Strength activity works.

  • Well, they say you should never assume but figured out why it wasn’t uploading.

As a complete coincidence, since I uploaded my last walk activity on the 5th of May and tried to upload my first Pilates activity on the 8th, it seems that my Garmin and Strava accounts became disassociated from each other. I have just reconnected them and uploads work fine.

I’ve never had that happen before in all the years I’ve been auto uploading rides and walks etc, strange, but there you go.
