Heat Acclimation Missing?

I live in Tucson, Az and we have been well above 80 F for a few weeks.  I haven't seen any heat acclimation info for my runs.  I'm running around 5 times a week.  I contacted Garmin today they said I need to have my phone with me during my runs with the Connect app open for the heat acclimation data to show up.  Is that correct?  I've never needed to run with my phone in the past for the stat to show up.  I'm on my 3rd Fenix 6s Pro Solar because of other software/hardware issues and I'm wondering if this is another issue.

  • Is the temperature high enough as reported on the map in the activity details? I ask you that because in my case it take the value from an airport 15-20km far from home, where in the morning (when I usually run) it's several degrees below my current location temperature, thus for Garmin I never run in the hot, while in reality I do most of the times during the summer.

  • yes.  I just checked my last 7 activities and Max, Min and Average temps as recorded in Connect are all above 80

  • It doesn't use the recorded temperature - it uses the temperature reported via the internet (the Connect Mobile app) from a local weather station. This is because the watch's thermometer can't measure ambient air correctly, since it's affected too much by body heat. I do wish that it would use the recorded temperatures if you had a Tempe paired to it, though, but unfortunately it doesn't. It uses only the temperature from the local weather station, in every case.

You can find out what temperature it used by viewing the activity on Connect - it will show the weather station temperature at the time of the activity in the top-right corner of the map.

So if, for example, you recorded an outdoor run where the temperature (of the watch) varied between 75-80 degrees, you won't get a temperature acclimation score if the local weather station said it was only 71 degrees at the time.

  • Ok.  I checked the temps via the app on my phone for the same set of runs and the lowest temp is 79

  • In that case, you definitely should've gotten a heat acclimation score. Are you sure you're looking for it in the right place?

    • On the watch, open the Training Status widget, and scroll down with the Down button; the heat acclimation score should be near the bottom
    • On Connect Mobile App, open Training Status, and you should see Heat Acclimation listed at the bottom.
  • Yep, missing in both places.  I see the altitude acclimation come and go when I train at higher elevations but I haven't seen the heat acclimation since last summer.

  • Weird. I wonder if there's a setting somewhere that turns that function on/off? I'm not familiar with any such setting though. Might be worth a call/email to Garmin tech support

Not quite. What you do need to do is sync your phone to the watch before your run, so that the watch has the latest weather forecast for your location. The weather widget has a small timestamp, so that you can see how recent the forecast was.

If you have synced your watch, you don't actually have to have your phone with you. (Although that will work too).

  • In case this can help someone else,

I realized I had removed the weather widget at some point (because it's not very accurate)

I was able to get the stat to start updating today by adding that widget back and syncing the watch with the app and making sure weather data was showing on the widget.  Garmin's information about requiring the app to be running on a phone that is with you during the activity was wrong.

  • In case this can help someone else,

You're absolutely right.  I stumbled on this by accident a while back.  I deleted Garmin's weather widget to use a CIQ app that provided more information.  I noticed on my next run that the temperature was no longer displayed in the upper right hand corner of the GPS display in Connect  afterwards.  I wish Garmin was able to take the temperature readings from the Tempe sensor and use that information for their calculations instead of just displaying the Tempe temperature in a graph.
