komoot ConnectIQ app = no turn-by-turn navigation

(in both cases watch set to "Follow Course" as I want to follow the course I've pre-made)

Routes sync'd from Strava (starring the route in Strava, automatically syncs with Connect, then to the watch) = turn-by-turn navigation prompts, works fairly well. Not perfect (likely down to the underlying map data) and is also a pain that starring a route sends it to ALL my Garmin devices - despite me never wanting a run on an Edge unit or ride on my fenix etc.. but does the job.

Routes sync'd from komoot using the ConnectIQ on-device app is a much tidier way of doing it (ie. just pull down the routes I want to the device I want).. only problem is no turn-by-turn navigation - just shows the course on the map (accurately) and you follow the line without any prompts.

I seem to remember from the past, back in early Strava days, this was a product of the route not having been processed through Connect first - same thing here?

This is not the case with the Edge unit (1030), using the komoot on-device ConnectIQ app to pull down routes has them routing with turn-by-turn just fine.

I also know there is the option to link up komoot and Connect so as newly planned routes are automatically sync'd across, and suspect this might make the turn-by-turn work (?), however this makes the mess problem even worse than Strava as EVERY route I plan on komoot will sync to EVERY Garmin device I own!

Anyone had better luck/experience?

  • Doesn't that just sync it to Garmin Connect - you still have to send it via GC to a specific device?

  • i.e It behaves exactly like the Strava sync - Routes sync'd from Strava (starring the route in Strava, automatically syncs with Connect, then to the watch)

  • (I'll be honest it's been a while since I've played with the Komoot sync, but didn't it (or at least used to) just sync to GC and from there you had to do the next step of push it from GC to a device)

  • Yes - according to https://support.komoot.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043448451-Using-Komoot-Courses-Sync-on-komoot - Komoot Sync syncs to GC only, you have to do the next step to send them to the device

Transferring Tours via Komoot Courses Sync

After setting up the connection via Komoot Courses Sync, the last 50 Tours by editing date will be automatically transferred from komoot to your Garmin Connect app. You need to have access to the maps of the region your Tour will start in. Whenever there is a new route saved to komoot or an existing route is edited and saved the route will be pushed to the Garmin Connect app. This is a one way connection only, which means that no completed routes will be transferred back to komoot. This connection is available for all sport types.

    Transfer with WiFi-enabled devices

With a WiFi-enabled watch or device you can transfer Tours without a Bluetooth connection when connected to WiFi. You still have to send the Tours manually from Garmin Connect to your device by clicking on “Send to device” in the Gamin Connect app. If there is no WiFi connection available, you can also transfer Tours the regular way via a bluetooth connection between your phone and your device.

With a WiFi-enabled device you can also transfer your Tours via Garmin Express from your computer. You need to install Garmin Express on your PC and synchronize your Tours from komoot. You will then find the same "Send to device" button on the web."

  • The problem is, unless there's a setting in Connect I've yet to find, all new course/routes/whatever sync'd to Garmin Connect are then automatically onwardly sync'd to ALL navigation-compatible Garmin devices you have on your account.

For me this means ALL running, cycling and hiking routes go to my two main devices (fenix and Edge) without differentiation. Also, if I ever dig out my older devices that I sometimes use as backups, these are bombarded with weeks/months worth of 'new' courses that have been sitting there queued!

  • Are you sure? I've not found that step from GC to device been automated, I've always had to push it manually.

I'll fire up my komoot now and test it

  • At least with Strava it's only the starred routes that get sync'd across, still not ideal as 1) the same starred function is also used to bookmark other peoples routes (which I may not want on my device) and 2) again all runs/cycles/hikes go to all devices.. but not as bad as the last 50 komoot tours along with every single tour planned moving forwards (I plan quite a few "What if?" scenarios and variations.. probably only 1 or 2 out of 10 will I actually then want to use).

  • Oh interesting - maybe they've change the behaviour! I'm sure this WAS the way is USED to work. but like yourself haven't tried it for the past few months or so (disconnected it for the reasons mentioned above).

  • I think you may be right and they have changed the behaviour as the TEST ROUTE did appear on my watch.

    I'll test PlotARoute as well

  • It sounds more like a Garmin Connect setting thing rather than anything komoot specific, ie. "Sync new course to all/selected/none".. but not one I've come across. Here's hoping!
