Which activity type for misc / unstructured activity?

I'd like to be able to log other fitness activities that don't have a category in the activity options.

For example, I sometimes do light workouts in VR playing various games that require movement.. I'd still like to log those as active time, and also have my heart rate status so I can get a feel for which games provide a better workout.

Even when weight training, I don't think I want to use the built-in 'strength training' as it seems to require loading a defined workout and I don't currently want to use it that way.

I found some activity options that maybe could work, but not sure:

  • Multisport
  • Cardio
  • Other (which asks me to name an activity if I select it)

What I do in VR is very 'light' Cardio, but that might be the best option.

For weight training, I'm not sure what to use. Again I don't want to have to use the watch while strength training, I just want to log the workout like other fitness watches do (heart rate, calories burned, time spent during that active time)

Any suggestions?

Thanks

  • Cardio is my suggestion. That's what I use for just general activity/exercise that doesn't really fall into any particular category.

Multisport basically just takes activities and chains them together, so you can do a Run-Walk-Swim, or some other combination of activities, and you have to do those exercises in that order. So that probably isn't the right answer for you.

"Other" is probably fine, too. It's not really any different than the Cardio activity, I don't think.

  • ah thanks.

'Other' actually seems interesting, I can copy the settings from an existing activity (so like copy from Cardio, but name it "VR" or whatever) and then I assume it will be listed with that name in my Garmin Connect history so I can more easily recall which misc activity I did that day.

  • You can also make a copy of the Cardio activity and call it whatever you'd like, too.

For example, I made a copy of the Cardio activity, turned on GPS in the copy, and renamed it "Outdoor Cardio". So now I can use Cardio for indoor activities, and Outdoor Cardio for when I'm outside and want the activity to include my GPS track.

When you open your activities, select "+ Add" at the bottom, and the first option in the list is "copy activity", and then you can select "Cardio", and it'll ask you want you want to name your new copy of the Cardio activity.

I just use "Other" and set up the data fields I want to use.  The sole purpose of the "Other" app is to cover activities that aren't available; hence the name other. :)

Not sure why my post says I'm replying to C.sco when I selected the reply button under the OP's initial post. Strange.

  • For the strength training, why don't you just use the Free option under strenght training?

  • Use the Activity "HIIT" and then select "Open". You can use the Start Button to start and end Game Segments and or Sessions - it will track your activity and heart rate, calorie count etc...
