Set course point for BOTH out and back

I am plotting an out-and-back 50 mile running course. I want to set Course Points for both directions. Using connect.garmin.com clicking to add a Course Point randomly selects whether I am on the outward direction or heading back... i.e mile 10 or mile 40. I want to set a Course Point for BOTH 10 and 40. How do I do this?

  • I haven't found a way. But regardless of that course points don't really work on Fenix if you sync with Garmin Connect. What happens is that Garmin Connect injects a bunch of additional TBT course points - one for every turn or even a sharp bend on the course - and those turn-by-turn course points make it hard to impossible to see your own course points.

The only workaround is to use an external course editor like PlotARoute and then drop course on your watch via USB.

  • I should have mentioned that I get around the TBT issue by using Garmin Connect to create a course and then moving it to my watch via USB and Android File Transfer (mac user). Course Points is my current hangup.

  • What I do for out-and-back courses, is I only make a one-way (the "out" portion) of the course, then I usually use the "back to start" (Trackback) function. But that method won't show the waypoints on the way back. So if I want to have the waypoints on the return trip, I just stop navigation when I turn around, load the course again, and use the "do in reverse" function.

  • I wish Garmin understood the use case for waypoints when doing ultra-marathon events. Waypoints are often used to track remaining distance to each next checkpoint or aid station. That is important information to know because it helps to plan when to eat next time and when to refill fluids.

In multiple ultra-marathon races that I've done there are out-and-back sections that hit the same aid station twice. In that case reversing the whole course isn't a viable solution - that will work only on a complete out-and-back race course.

Also there are often race courses that consist of multiple different loops where runners go through the same aid station multiple times visiting it at various distances. That is quite common.

So there is really a need to (a) support user waypoints without Garmin Connect messing them up with hundreds of useless turn-by-turn directions and (b) either have a way to setup waypoints by distance or allow multiple waypoints at the same point but at various distances.

I should mention that I had exactly the same feedback to Suunto, and after awhile they did actually implement that in Suunto App.

  • I found a work around for this.  Near your course point/ aid station, use "freehand" to drag your course slightly off trail.  This will create separation between your out and back paths allowing you to definitively place your course point on either the out or back.

  • Found that an alternative work around to whats been suggested is plotting a one way course as others suggest, Step 2 add all of your points for the way there. Then select the option to make the course an "out and back" course, then add your waypoints for the way back.

Unfortunately you have to plot the points twice, which on the current app is like pulling teeth with a hammer, but at least you get the course in there and have a contiguous course.
