How to show track on Hike activity (without navigating)?

Hi,

I want to show a course or previously uploaded track on the hike map but I don't need navigation. (I'm doing a 4 day hike so I just need to see the tracks, like I can on my eTrex.)

Any idea how to do this?

If I start a Hike, select Navigation and select the track as a Course to follow, I can see the track as a course but I get different data screens to the Hike activity (without navigation).

Cheers,

Michael

  • There's no really easy way to do it unfortunately, but it is possible. Easiest way to do it, I believe, is to make a course on something like Plotaroute, and save the course as a gpx image (map layer), put the file in your /Garmin folder on the watch, and turn it on as a map layer in your activity.

I haven't tried that, but I've heard others say it works. I might also be mistaken in the directions, hopefully someone will correct me if I made a mistake.

  • It sounds like you have two issues.  One, you want to follow a course/track line without Turn by Turn notifications and two, you are seeing additional data screens if you do select navigation during your activity.  The first issue has been already addressed.

To prevent the extra data screens during navigation, you go into the Navigation Settings.  Long Menu button press at the watchface screen and scroll down and select Navigation.  Select Data Screens and turn off the screens you don't want to see.

  • You can load the track as a course and turn off TBT notifications. This way it will be shown on the map but you don't really have to follow TBT directions, and there won't be any popups or notifications, or anything like that. I think you can even disable off-course and back-on-course notifications.

  • Thanks everyone. I've turned off everything in Navigation that I don't need and now it's operating pretty much as I'd like.

One annoyance, despite turning off all Navigation alerts, I'm still getting an alert when I rejoin a course. It's onscreen and a buzz so on a long hike this is going to waste battery life big time. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
