Excessive Battery Drain - External HRM impact?

Fenix 6X, sw 15.20 / ANT v6.11 / Sensor Hub 8.00

In case this is of use to those investigating short battery life...

A pause in my running activity means I no longer need connectivity to my external/strap heart rate mon it or.  I turned this link off in the Sensors menu and my battery performance has improved significantly with a new charge now showing 21days where’s previous showing 15 (and never achieving that).

In normal everyday use, the watch is now no longer searching for the external HRM so this might correlate to the apparent improvement in battery life.

This is just an observation and I haven’t performed any in-depth testing or investigation; the improvement may therefore just be a coincidence.

  • For me it drains an average of 0.5% per hour or double what it should consume. I noticed, by doing some tests that even putting it in battery saving mode, the consumption remains the same except during an activity where the consumption is regular.

  • In normal everyday use, the watch should not be searching for the sensor anyway, and should not make any difference in power consumption. I just tried turning my chest strap off in the settings, and it made no difference to battery life estimates in watch mode.

Note that opening the HR widget, or the sensors menu will activate the search function.

  • I get 21 days with or without a HRM paired. Are you paired through BT or ANT?

My runs with a HRM doesn't seem to affect my battery drain much either, my battery app always gives me an average of 0.2% per hour regardless.

I figure ANT+ receive isn't taking up much more than the wrist HRM that gets turned off when you have a strap?

  • My runs with a HRM doesn't seem to affect my battery drain much either, my battery app always gives me an average of 0.2% per hour regardless.

I think your figures are a little suspect, if you don't mind me chipping in.

0.2% per hour gives 500 hours battery life - that is 21 days give or take. But the F6X will only go up to 21 days in Smart Watch mode, so I'm not really convinced by a 0.2% average here during activities, with or without sensors.

And if you talk about 'running' I think you need to be explicate that you are not talking about running outdoors (with GPS) as you obviously don't get 500 hours of GPS time :)

  • Trying to max my battery life is exactly why I got a monitoring app :)

Since getting an HRM-Dual, I've been going on ourdoor GPS run activities about 5 hours a week, with the strap and RD-Pod on Ant+.

I have BT connected to my phone, 24/7 HRM and activity tracking, Battery saver at night with hrm and activity enabled. I get about 16 days from 100-0% battery, which if measured as 0.24% an hour is roughly correct.

Before the HRM-Dual I used to listen to music on my runs.over BT, also with the RD-Pod on Ant+, and then I would get about 14 days battery with between 0.2-0.3%/hr reported.

I think the 21 day smartwatch mode that garmin cites includes 1 hour a day of gps activity, so it's a bit optimistic but not out of the ballpark.

  • Also here big excessive battery drain. I updated to 16.10 and it was good for a couple of days, now I have to charge it again on a daily basis. Using standard watchface, using gps when running 3 times / week (30 minutes run). This drain started a couple of weeks ago and I have no clue, before this I charged 1 time / week with a daily 30 minutes run.. Have followed all tips but without success.

  • Here's an update:

I've had the watch off-charger for 15 days now. And the battery app I have installed says more than 3 days left. The app is more accurate than the watchface data field, which says 4 days remaining.

That's with 24/7 HR and activity tracking, smartwatch functions on, and daily outdoor GPS runs (about 30mpw) all with an HRM-Dual strap on ANT+, including a couple of hours of music playback.

I'm not sure how much I would get without the strap, but with 18+ days 100%-to-0%, I don't think I'm missing much.

  • I was also concerned about the 'searching' my pods says disconnected, it's an ant+ thing that should be changed to 'listening' maybe?

Certainly makes no difference to me. HRM dual.

I had the fenix 5 and TBF the only battery drain I have ever seen, including an update Garmin stated had a battery drain, is third party watch faces and battery apps.

Since I had my 6 Pro I haven't even installed ciq on my phone.

Suppose all devices and users get different mileage.
