Garmin 6X Sapphire broken by update?

Hey everyone, I have a 6X Sapphire that was working fine till I noticed it was stuck in a boot loop one morning. The watch was charging overnight. Went through all the soft/hard reset procedures and other advice (like trying to plug it into the computer with Garmin Express) with no success. The screen would first show the Garmin triangle, and it would move on to the Garmin logo for a second or so and then reboot. I looked online at various postings here and elsewhere, and it seems other people were having similar issues around the time I did due to OTA updates. It seemed a few people were able to fix their problems by various hard reset procedures that didn’t work for me.

Garmin customer service wants me to pay $190 for an exchange for a refurbished unit. For a watch I paid close to $1000 just a little over a year ago, I can’t see myself throwing more money into the pit for a refurb that might break later by another OTA update.

Has anyone here gone through anything similar? Any help or advice would be great!!

  • I am sorry your Fenix 6X Pro is stuck on the triangle and not booting up to the main time display. Regarding OTA updates, there have not been any recent OTA updates. Double checking, the v15.20 last software update was released on February 18th. When stuck at the triangle after powering on, sometimes you can get it to resolve using the secondary master reset vs. the primary master reset. Some Fenix owners across different generations, have stated doing the secondary reset multiple times has resolved the issue.

  • Thanks for your reply. This problem actually started around mid February (has been going on for awhile and trying to get help from Garmin CS). I would spend about 10 minutes each day doing master and secondary resets hoping I'll get lucky.

    After i installed the 16.10 RC software i get the same issue.

    On the morning the watch freezed and i restarted.

    It has entered an infinite loop like it starts until "Reading FIT files" message and there stuck.

    Restarted many times.

    Left for one hour to start.

    Try to see if is accessible via Express etc.

    No lock.

    The watch was stuck even after the update worked fine, but the next morning was broken. Inexplicable and  totally unacceptable on a 900USD watch (on the time of the purchase).

    A hard reset fix the situation but i lost all paid apps/widgets, settings, pay wallet, all barcodes, all 2FA settings etc.

    A total disaster.

    I have reverted to 15.20 after, and I am still struggling to restore the state before the crash.

  • Man, what is going on with these watches?! I tried a hard reset and secondary resets so many times, but nothing is working for me. Going to keep working at it. I turned on my Apple Watch series 1 the other day...still working after 6 years. 

  • Unfortunately, I've been trying these solutions you suggested but none of them are working. 

  • There is nothing going on when you look at the bigger picture and the 2+ million in use worldwide. I am sorry you had a bad experience with your watch but that is not the normal.

    For anyone else that comes across this thread, please try the primary and secondary master reset if your watch is frozen and will not boot up to the main display. If you cannot resolve the issue, please reach out to your regional Outdoor Product Support.
