Navigation/maps - recording while navigating a course?

If I'm following a course (from an imported gpx file), is there a way to record my route while navigating?

The next time I hike that trail I want to take it further south then use the new route next time, so I need to record it (as well as navigate the one I have, which I know I'll end up going off course at some point when I take it further down)

Thanks

  • It will automatically record the ACTUAL route you took, rather than the pre-defined course.

To follow this route the next time (rather than the pre-defined course) go to Hiking> (press and hold the middle button) Navigation> Activities> then select the relevant activity.

  • oh this is great! Thanks for letting me know :)

  • This doesn't actually answer the question. The device automatically records the actual route, but unless you define some activity before you start, there will be no activity to follow the next time. It won't be in the list of activities. What do you select BEFORE you start navigating the course so that there is an activity with the new route to select the next time?

  • Actually it does answer the question, and the OP thought it did too.

If you follow the prompts above, you can see you can navigate predefined Courses, or past Activities. Past Activities could have been done following a Course precisely, where you deviated from a Course, or were not following a Course at all - it makes no difference.

  • Let me add that Past Activities work only if you dont plug your watch as a usb storage and move the files to your pc/mac, which is practically a delete. And evidently unless you delete the past activities on your watch.

I observed that after moving the fit files, sometimes gc sync back the summary of the past activities, but never the gps track.

But anyway mcalista is totally right, he could not know there were some strange users who wrote a powershell script to move the fit files from the watch to a hard disk to archive them. :-)

  • It must just be my thick head, cuz I'm still confused. Whether you follow those prompts to navigate a past activity or a course, what is your starting point? How is your new automatic recording of your track stored in some discrete form or unit that you can find and manipulate when you are finished? Do you start a new activity or a Track Me before selecting what you want to navigate?

I just got the watch and was using a very old Trex so not familar with the software at all.

  • Hello, I would like to know how to adjust the navigation settings to have step-by-step instructions and is there an audible signal when you arrive near an intersection? If so, how do I currently adjust it when I do a route with guidance I only have the instructions on the screen and it does not warn me when I am going to arrive at an intersection thank you
