Navigate my fenix 6 for hiking

I am a new user of smart watches. I bought fenix 6 because I live to hike and wanted maps so I don't get lost. Can anyone explain exactly what or how to use this option

  • Only the "6 Pro", "6 Pro Solar", and "6 Sapphire" models have map capability. The base model "Fenix 6" can't do maps.

If your Fenix 6 has map capability, then to see the map:

    1. Go outside
    2. Press the Top-Right button to open your activities
    3. Select "Hike"
    4. Wait for GPS lock
    5. Press the Top-Right button to start the activity
    6. Use up/down buttons to scroll through the data screens until you reach the map.
    7. When you're done hiking, press the top-right button to pause the activity, and select "Save".

If there's no map screen, then you either don't have a Fenix 6 with map capability (see first part of this post), or you just need to add the map to your activity:

    1. Open the Hike activity
    2. Long-press the Menu/Up button
    3. Select "Hike Settings"
    4. Select "Data Screens"
    5. Scroll down to the "Add New" option at the bottom
    6. Select "Map"
    7. Choose where to put it in your data screen "wheel", press top-right button to save.

You'll be able to add the Map even if your Fenix doesn't support maps - but in that case, it will only show a breadcrumb trail and a line for a course (if you have one loaded for that activity) and there will be no other map content besides that.

Assuming your watch does indeed support maps, then once you've figured out how to find the map on your Hike activity, you can do all kinds of things. Long-press the menu/up button, and you can zoom/pan the map, navigate to a destination, load a course to navigate, etc.... tons of options, way more than I can go into with this post. You can even download 3rd-party maps onto the watch if you want.

It's definitely worthwhile to take a look at the manual for your watch - these are extremely complex and capable devices, and it's almost impossible to figure it all out on your own.

If you bought the watch specifically for maps, and it turns out that it's just a base model "Fenix 6" without any map capability, then I recommend returning it and buying one that does support maps (Pro, Pro Solar, or Sapphire).

  • You are amazing! The exact help I needed. I do have GPS. I just did not understand how to use the watch yo it's full potential so I just put in the  drawer. Now that it is hiking season again I really want to use it

Can I download trails to follow?

  • Having GPS doesn't guarantee that it has maps - you should still check to make sure it's a model that has maps, if you're not sure.

Yes, you can download trails to follow, there are a number of different ways you can do it. The easiest way is probably to download the GPX file from AllTrails, then go to "Courses" in Garmin Connect, upload a new course, select the GPX file you downloaded from Alltrails, and sent it to the watch. Then, in the Hike activity in your watch, open the menu and go to Navigation > Course > select the course you saved from Alltrails, and select Go. You can use other trail sources besides AllTrails (and you can even make your own as well), but AllTrails is probably the easiest way to start out.

The above will work even if your watch doesn't have maps, as all Garmin GPS watches can navigate downloaded courses.

I'd recommend going to YouTube and searching for "Fenix 6 tutorial", there are a lot of great videos out there that will walk you through how to do a lot of stuff.

  • In addition to 's post, I would also say that you can predefine a route (called a Course) in Garmin Connect, send it to the watch, then follow that Course.

    1. Select the Hiking app
    2. Press and hold the middle left button to bring up Hiking Settings
    3. Scroll Down to and select Navigation
    4. Scroll down and select Courses.
    5. Select your Course.
    6. Press Start.

This will give you Turn by Turn directions, Off Course Alerts, and allow you to see the Course on the map.
